Above Ground Structure

Hauptzugang: The main access to Site-DE12 is located at the southern end of the facility and is accessible via a secured access road. Checkpoint Alpha-1 is located at the beginning of the road, 10 km from the site. Checkpoint Alpha-2 is located halfway down the road and Checkpoint Beta is located directly at the main gate. The access road is monitored with motion detectors and cameras. Guard posts are stationed along the road within 2 km of each other for quick response in case of unauthorized third party intrusion. These can be accessed via dirt roads off the access road by off-road vehicles. The main access to Site-DE12 consists of two steel gates in the form of a security gate, which are electronically and mechanically secured. Access is monitored from the Beta control point. The gates can be electrified if necessary and self-firing systems are installed in case of emergency. From the main gate, an access path leads between Test Site 1 and 2 to the main building and the depot.

  • Guard Post Staff: Guard posts Alpha-1 and -2 are each manned around the clock by three guards, each equipped with an HK SFP9, pepper spray, taser pistols and telescopic baton. In addition, two HK MP5N submachine guns are available to each guard team. Guard post Beta is manned around the clock with five guards, each equipped with a Walther PPC, pepper spray and telescopic baton, as well as two Fabarm STF 12 fore-end repeating rifles and three HK MP5 submachine guns. Guard posts along the main access road are each manned by two guards, equipped with one HK433-12.5" assault rifle and one Walther PPQ each.
  • Side Access Points: Site-DE12 has three additional side access points at the west, north, and east ends of the facility. These access points are heavily guarded and can only be reached via hidden trails in the surrounding forest. They serve as emergency escape routes. Access routes to the secondary access points are located between Testing Areas 2 and 3, 4 and 5, 6 and 7, respectively.

Main Site: The heart of the site is located above and below ground in the center of the facility. The above ground portion consists of:

Main Building: The main building has a total of six floors.

  • Ground floor: Here is the entrance hall, the clothing storage including laundry, changing rooms with toilets and showers and the reception.
  • Floors 1-2: Housing. Floor 1 houses Class D staff accommodations in the form of secured cells and, for trusted D Class employees, living quarters with minimal furnishings. The floor is monitored by the security center via cameras and security officers provide on-site guarding for staff. This floor is connected to the underground floors by its own elevator. The staff accommodation is located on floor 2. The living quarters are furnished to a comfortable, upscale standard. There are recreational rooms with numerous entertainment options as well as a separate, small cinema. The elevator is separate and leads from the first floor directly to this floor and the floors above. The elevator may only be used by facility staff. D-class personnel are strictly prohibited from entering.
  • Floors 3-4: This is where the lowest security level laboratories are located. Mostly experiments of a non-anomalous nature and standard experiments that pose no potential danger are conducted here. The conference rooms of the scientific staff and the office of the scientific director are also located on these floors.
  • Floor 5: Office Floor. The offices of the administration are located here (the administration is located in a separate part of the site).
  • Floor 6: Observation Floor. From here, field tests and trials at the test sites are visually monitored and documented. Special observation rooms attached to the exterior of the main building are available for this purpose.
  • Roof: The flat roof of the main building houses various antennas and satellite dishes for communication. Furthermore, there is an observation post of the security service as well as a viewing platform (this was installed at the special request of the site director).

Supply Depot: In the immediate vicinity of the main building is the site's maintenance and construction facilities. The workshops of craftsmen and construction workers are located here, including a building with a washhouse, break room and recreation room, garages of various sizes, a warehouse for building materials, the nursery, a gas station and waste disposal. The depot surrounds the main building in a semicircle.

Testing Areas: The main building and depot are surrounded by eight 10-acre testing areas laid out in an octagon shape around the center. These in turn are separated from each other by 4.5 m high, secured reinforced concrete walls. The testing areas can be rebuilt and configured as desired for the particular tests. Four of the sites can be accessed directly from the main building, while the remaining four are accessed via heavy, specially secured steel gates from the depot. The test objects are fed to the testing areas from underground.

Subterranean Structure

Beneath the main building, a central shaft leads 250 meters down to the facility's seven underground floors. The shaft is 15 meters in diameter and contains two passenger elevators and a steel staircase for emergency use, and can be destroyed by explosive charges should a catastrophic containment breach occur. The charges are placed every 25 meters. Furthermore, all underground facilities are protected by massive armored steel doors and gates.

  • Floor U-1 Supply rooms, a cafeteria, additional offices, an infirmary with operating room, and the barracks of the site's own RTF DE12-ℜ (12-Reinhard "Waldgeister" (i.e. Forest Spectres)) are located here. This barracks is also home to the site's own security service. Furthermore, the distribution center for test objects is located here, from where they are allocated and supplied to the respective test sites. This is directly connected to the underground station of the transit line by a freight elevator and, via another separate elevator, to the containment department.
  • Administration: Between levels U1 and U2, specially secured and accessible by stairs, are the offices of the site administration. Here, among others, the director of the site has their office and accommodation. The administration has its own power and water connections and can be exited in an emergency through its own hidden and secured escape tunnel. Absolutely no anomalies may be stored in this area of the site.
  • Floor U-2 The underground transit route to Sites-DE3 -DE7, -DE16 and -DE24 runs on this level. Via the station installed here, the SCP objects to be tested in each case are transferred to the facility by means of a maglev train. Furthermore, the station is used for arrivals and departures of the personnel as well as for the transfer of D-class personnel. There are 6 remote-controlled guns (Minigun GAU-2) mounted on the ceiling, which can be operated from a guard post at the main entrance of the station. The station, as well as the access shaft, is equipped with explosive devices for absolute emergencies. These are housed in the walls and ceiling in bulletproof boxes to prevent accidental detonation when using the Gatling guns.
  • Power Supply: Sealed off from the rest of the site by several reinforced concrete walls and gates are the boiler room and the energy supply. Energy is supplied by an initially experimental molten salt reactor, which since 2015 has replaced the classic nuclear reactor that previously supplied the site with energy. However, it is still maintained and kept in working order should technical defects or other problems occur with the primary energy source. Further, there is enough electrical energy stored in several redox batteries to keep the site fully operational for two weeks in the event of an emergency.
  • Floor U-3 This floor houses the medium safety level laboratories. Non-critical experiments are conducted and various SCP containment measures are developed here. Furthermore, the site's archives are located here. Access is granted only to personnel with security clearance-2 or higher.
  • Floor U-3A Located 150 meters from the center to the north between floors U-3 and U-4, this floor houses the highest security level laboratories. Experiments on SCP objects and hazardous experiments take place here. Access is allowed only to personnel with security clearance-3 or higher and D-class personnel for experimental purposes. The laboratories are accessed via a tunnel (3 m by 3 m in cross-section). The tunnel is equipped with explosive charges placed every 25 meters to allow it to be blown in the event of a devastating hazardous situation. In addition, several bulkheads made of 15 cm thick armored steel provide additional protection.
  • Floor U-4 This floor contains various storage rooms and additional archives for files that are subject to secrecy and contain sensitive information.
  • Floor U-5 The containment department. This floor is located 250 meters from the center in the southern direction, at a depth of 180 meters. Access is allowed only to personnel with security clearance-3 or higher. Safe-anomalies are transferred via a tunnel (10 m by 5 m in cross-section), also equipped with charges every 25 meters in case of a catastrophic containment breach, to an elevator near the center for direct transport to the distribution center. Access to the containment section is secured by an 80 cm thick, 8 m by 5 m armored steel gate. This gate can only be opened and closed via a secured guard post inside the containment section; it cannot be operated manually. Sensors monitor the gate, which automatically initiate detonation of explosive devices in the tunnel should the gate be forced open and/or breached. Euclid anomalies, however, are housed in their own sector. This is composed of several individual chambers, with one assigned to each anomaly. In an emergency, these chambers can be completely buried by explosive charges and are each additionally secured by an 80 cm diameter armored steel bulkhead. Another one-meter-thick bulkhead of the same material also seals off the sector from the rest of the site.

Testing Area-5

Size: 10 ha

Security Facilities: 4.50 m high camouflaged reinforced concrete wall secured with NATO wire, electric fence (350,000 V, 200 A), steel catwalks at the top of the wall for surveillance personnel, fifty self-firing devices per test site, explosive charges in the ground, access via armored double door, ground level freight elevator secured by solid steel plates.

Basic Configuration: Homogeneous earth surface.

The wall enclosing the test site is painted in camouflage colors on the exterior and strategically placed trees and shrubs allow it to blend in with the surroundings. Furthermore, there is an extensive no-fly zone over the entire research facility complex. The testing area is directly connected to the main building by a double armored steel access door. Test objects are fed to the site via a ground-level freight elevator in the center.

The special feature of this facility is the possibility to adapt the test site individually to the object to be tested in order to create an ideal test environment. For this purpose, an in-house landscaping, carpentry and construction department as well as various craftsmen and mechanics are available.

If a field test for an SCP object is scheduled, the terrain is adapted accordingly. Then 3 - 4 guards (snipers) take up position on the catwalks at the wall and the object is brought to the test site by means of the freight elevator in the middle. Now the test can begin. As a rule, the SCP object, if it is alive, is given some time to acclimatize so as not to jeopardize the progress of the test. If necessary, a research team can enter the site via the double gate in an all-terrain vehicle to conduct tests on site. The ground of the compound is crisscrossed with a network of individually detonatable explosive devices1, which can be used to take countermeasures in the event of an escape attempt. Sensors report the current position of the object at all times and surveillance cameras, which are distributed throughout the compound, record every movement.

Additional Information

The Field Test Research Site-DE12 (FFE-DE12) was founded in 1967 by Prof. Dr. Heinrich Markward, initially as a research facility for experimental containment measures. Initially, the site consisted only of the main building with two underground floors. Later, however, the demand for adequate implementation of field tests on SCP objects became so great that a suitable location had to be sought. The secluded location of FFE-DE12 made this site the ideal starting point for this project.

In 1972, two test sites were constructed on either side of the main building and initial tests were successfully conducted. After the demand continued to grow and the site successfully implemented its new purpose, the entire facility was rebuilt from the ground up. Additional underground levels were constructed and the present test sites were created. The work was completed in 1981.

At that time, test objects had to be laboriously transported to the site by truck, which entailed a high risk of danger. This was remedied in 2009 with the construction of the underground transit route to site DE13. From then on, the test objects, as well as the personnel and all supplies, could be transported quickly and conveniently by the magnetic levitation trains of the transit line.

After a severe containment breach in 1998, in which SCP-███-DE almost managed to escape from the site4, all security measures had to be revised and the walls surrounding the site had to be raised and the site's security team increased. Furthermore, the site's own RTF DE12-ℜ (12-Reinhard "Forest Spirits") was established and stationed there.

In 1999, as part of the development of SCP-150-DE, the liquid salt reactor was built and commissioned at Site-DE12. It was intended to serve as a proof of concept and provide the basis for a scaled-down version of itself that would operate SCP-150-DE units. While this research approach proved to be a dead end for its intended goal, the reactor provided considerable amounts of energy, so in 2012 it was decided to switch the power supply to this new device.
