CLASSIFIED INFORMATION - TOP SECRET
This document is meant for internal use of Project ASPHODELUS only. Dissemination to persons without clearance level 5/296-DE or 4/ASPHODELUS is strictly forbidden.
You are dead. Congratulations on your promotion.
You are now a member of Project ASPHODELUS, charged with researching and containing SCP-296-DE.
In difference to all the other secret projects you are surely part of, this is indeed our true task, assuming our intelligence can be trusted. We somehow try to contain SCP-296-DE.
Just that our endeavours are complicated by us being part of the anomaly.
Let me explain how it came to this:
As far as we can reconstruct the events, a ΝΚ-Class Scenario occurred in 2055, which the Foundation couldn't contain or could contain only insufficiently, resulting in the complete extermination of humankind. You shouldn't be surprised that the Foundation had a contingency plan for events like this.
Automatic systems tried to restore humankind by activating SCP-2000. Since this happened before proper containment was achieved, the plan failed. The new humans were decomposed by the nanomachines aswell.
You may remember SCP-2000 as laughably far above your pay grade. And even for our group, acquiring just a single copy-protected copy of SCP-2000's documentation is an elaborate task, but there is one information we could wring from the O5: It uses Class-G hallucinogenics combined with developmental hypnotherapy on the re-created human population.
In all likelihood, you never heard of Class-G. They are the remains of a barely circumvented ΜΑ-Scenario in the nineteen-sixties, and they are the substance thoughts are made of. This is not a metaphor.
As it turned out, they have severe side effects. If a human consciousness passes over to the afterlife, (In case you didn't knew: there is an afterlife. And yes, we had diplomatic relationships with it.) it takes its whole realm of experience with it. Just that in this case, they were physically absorbed by a nanite swarm.
The developmental hypnotherapy should make humankind believe that everything is alright. A perfect antimeme to maintain the veil. As result, a wholly new afterlife was created, one that is superficially indiscernible from the real world.
Now it is on us to explore and protect this new reality. Althought we needed a nudge from above to get us rolling, the intelligence gathered from the remains of the actual Foundation is sadly of little merit; they appear to know even less than us.
First things first: You can still die. We only know that this doesn't has the intended effect. Just as it's still possible for fully sapient humans to be born. We don't know where the babies come from; without a last second veto by the ethics committee, we would have sterilized humankind by airborne agents already.
Other anomalies are an issue too. It could very well be that physical anomalies only persist as memes, but nobody's keen to find it out. But many anomalies got here together with us, and might have aswell been duplicated from baseline reality. This world is made of cognition, and we don't want to know what cognitohazards could do with it.
Let me be honest: The chances are worse than just against us. Before we can even start to think of an escape plan, we first have to prevent this world from forgetting itself, or being accidentally dissolved by our own creations. We from Project ASPHODELUS are having the paradox hope that all of our efforts are based on misinformation, but sadly, the more we seek, the more obvious the truth becomes.
We are the anomaly now, yet we continue to contain.
Secure. Contain. Protect.
