SCP-1010-JP

Item #: SCP-1010-JP

Object Class: Keter

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-1010-JP is currently uncontained and no containment strategy has been established. The Foundation's efforts to contain it are to focus on preventing and eliminating the spread of the effects caused by the SCP-1010-JP Emergence Event.

The Response Team "Men in Black" is to remain on standby at all times from 04:00 to 20:00 JST in order to address the SCP-1010-JP Emergence Event. Once a phenomenon that is presumed to be an SCP-1010-JP Emergence Event is detected from any of the anomalous phenomenon monitoring networks covering Japan, it is to be immediately reported to the Response Team "Men in Black".

Following confirmation of the occurrence of an SCP-1010-JP Emergence Event, the Response Team "Men in Black" is to be dispatched to conduct the activities listed below.

  • Identification and confirmation of the area affected by the SCP-1010-JP Emergence Event
  • Monitoring of video and photographic records within the affected area of the SCP-1010-JP Emergence Event
  • Administration of Class A amnestics to humans within the affected area of the SCP-1010-JP Emergence Event
  • Search, detention, and interrogation of SCP-1010-JP-A instances, before removing the effects from them through Class A amnestic treatment

For detailed response procedures, see Document 1010-JP-MIB, which is available only to members of the Response Team "Men in Black".

In the event that an individual suspected of being an SCP-1010-JP-A instance is discovered in circumstances unrelated to the search efforts associated with each SCP-1010-JP Emergence Event, the subject is to be detained as soon as possible and given appropriate amnestic treatment. Whenever possible, observation records of SCP-1010-JPs that exist outside the Foundation are to be accounted for with cover stories that attribute them to similar meteorological phenomena. Any records for which cover stories are not applicable are to be destroyed.

Description: SCP-1010-JP is an unidentified flying object that has been sighted in Japan. Previous observation records indicate that its shape is a sphere approximately 12 meters in diameter, and it is stationary in the air by an unknown means. Although its material is unknown, it emits red light from its surface, and its emission spectral wavelength has a central intensity between 630 nm and 650 nm. Further study and elucidation of its composition is currently prevented due to the properties described below.

At irregular intervals, SCP-1010-JP can be optically observed only from a specific area in Japan under certain conditions. This sequence of phenomena is referred to as an SCP-1010-JP Emergence Event. The areas affected by SCP-1010-JP Emergence Events meet the following conditions in all known cases.

  • It is located on land in Honshu, Shikoku, northern Kyushu, and surrounding islands (See Document 1010-JP-MIB for a full list of affected areas).
  • It is between sunrise and sunset in the area.
  • Weather has a cloud cover of 7 oktas1 or greater.

Notably, significantly more events tend to occur within one hour of sunrise or within two hours before sunset.

Each SCP-1010-JP Emergence Event affects an area of approximately 10,000 to 20,000 square meters, and less than 60 meters in altitude from the ground surface. SCP-1010-JP emerges in the air about 1000m away from the center of the affected area in the direction of the sun on the celestial sphere. SCP-1010-JP cannot be observed from outside the affected area, and no irregularities can be detected even when approaching the position where it is supposed to be located. At this time, the only clue to determine the nature of SCP-1010-JP is the observation results of SCP-1010-JP Emergence Events from within the affected areas. Based on these properties, it has been pointed out that SCP-1010-JP may be a purely non-physical anomaly; however, all observations made to date from within the affected areas indicate that SCP-1010-JP is a physical entity in the form of a luminous sphere.

During an SCP-1010-JP Emergence Event, an indefinite number of humans temporarily disappear within the affected area. Although most cases occur when there are no witnesses around the targeted individuals, vanishing in public view has also been reported.

Each SCP-1010-JP Emergence Event concludes with SCP-1010-JP's disappearance about 30 minutes after its occurrence. At the same time, the disappeared humans reappear in the vicinity of the location where their disappearance took place. Similar to the disappearance phenomenon, their reappearance tends to occur in areas with few observers.

The subjects have no memories during the disappearance and develop a belief that SCP-1010-JP is monitoring humanity (humans under the influence of this perception are hereafter referred to as SCP-1010-JP-A). The intensity of this belief varies between SCP-1010-JP-A instances, and whether or not they openly profess the acquired belief to their surrounding community depends on the instance.

Other characteristics observed in SCP-1010-JP-A in general include an increased aversion to actions that each instance perceives as "wrongdoing" as well as an enhanced sense of obligation to adhere to the normative behavior.2 Interrogation of SCP-1010-JP-A instances led to the conclusion that these changes were associated with the delusion that they were being monitored. These perceptions have been confirmed to be removable by the Foundation's amnestic technology.

The number of SCP-1010-JP-A instances produced by an SCP-1010-JP Emergence Event is indefinite. As far as the Foundation has confirmed, the maximum was 1█ instances in the case of ██████, Saitama Prefecture, on 198█/██/██ ; the minimum was 2 instances in the case of ██████, Fukui Prefecture, on 200█/██/██.

Research of historical records prior to Japan falling under the jurisdiction of the Foundation has revealed that SCP-1010-JP Emergence Events have occured since around the 12th century. These records indicate that SCP-1010-JP was at one time considered identical to the sun, and it is believed that it had a significant influence on the Japanese national culture, customs, and religious beliefs.

Based on the meteorological and geographical requirements of SCP-1010-JP Emergence Events, as well as the relative positioning of SCP-1010-JP, a hypothesis has been proposed that either SCP-1010-JP itself or an associated unknown entity is causing SCP-1010-JP Emergence Events with the intention of misidentifying SCP-1010-JP to humans as the sun.

A number of non-anomalous secondary impacts originating from the SCP-1010-JP-A instances generated in the past have remained in contemporary Japanese cultural practices. However, due to the constant countermeasures against SCP-1010-JP Emergence Events since 1945, when Japan came under the jurisdiction of the Foundation, the secondary impacts of SCP-1010-JP on Japanese culture have gradually decreased, and the remaining influences were concluded to be within the scope of non-anomalous cultural practices.

While SCP-1010-JP is currently classified as a Keter class anomaly, this is due to the inability to accurately predict SCP-1010-JP Emergence Events, the difficulty in fully capturing SCP-1010-JP-A instances, and the fact that SCP-1010-JP itself is uncontained. It is estimated that as long as the nature of SCP-1010-JP does not undergo any changes in the future and the Foundation maintains its countermeasures, the risk of its anomalous nature being uncovered by the general public or the possibility of an MK-Class Cultural Alteration Scenario occurring within Japan is unlikely.

SCP-1010-JP, observed at 12:10 (JST) on 200█/██/██ from ██████, Fukui Prefecture. This is one of the few cases where it was observed during the hours when the solar altitude was near its highest point. Through the clouds, the actual sun's rays are visible behind SCP-1010-JP.

Addendum: As of 20██/██/██, 3 of the ████ SCP-1010-JP-A instances interrogated by the Foundation to date have been reported to have used the term "Tento" or "Tentoh" to refer to SCP-1010-JP. It is speculated that similar instances existed prior to the Foundation's containment efforts, albeit this has not been confirmed due to the limited sample size.
