Item #: SCP-1500-JP-EX
Object Class: Explained
Subclass: Thaumiel
Special Containment Procedures: N/A
Description: SCP-1500-JP-EX is a drug with organophosphorous compounds as its main component. The phenomenon, which was considered abnormal behavior at the time of the discovery, occurs when a mixture of SCP-1500-JP-EX and a drug-type memory treatment agent used at the Foundation in the 1950s (SCP-1500-JP-EX-1) is injected intravenously.
After injection of SCP-1500-JP-EX-1, the subject is promptly treated with JCS 300-I1 and placed into a coma. The subject then maintains the lowest class of vital activity for approximately one to two weeks before regaining consciousness. The memory processing ability of SCP-1500-JP-EX-1 itself is difficult to evaluate due to the difficulty in distinguishing between the subject's memory and the blurred memory caused by the coma, but it is estimated to be slightly superior to that of the memory processing drugs of the time. However, it is estimated that SCP-1500-JP-EX-1 itself is slightly superior to memory processing drugs at that time.
It has been concluded that these phenomena are caused by a pharmacological synergistic effect of the two drugs, because both SCP-1500-JP-EX-1 and the memory processing agent used at the Foundation at that time are substances that act on the paralysis of the cerebral cortex. In particular, SCP-1500-JP-EX is designated as Explained because there are no abnormalities in the raw materials or manufacturing process, and the phenomenon can be explained by a non-anomalous system of brain science, assuming the existence of a memory processing agent that acts on the cerebral cortex.
Additionally, strict control of the drug amount is required to cause the above phenomenon. Considering the risk of mortality, the dose and mix ratio of SCP-1500-JP-EX-1 must be controlled on the order of 10-5g. This dose has a greater effect on tolerance to memory-processing drugs than body weight or hormone levels, and it is difficult to replicate experiments in which SCP-1500-JP-EX-1 administration causes unusual expression without sufficient information on the experimental subject.
SCP-1500-JP-EX was discovered as a byproduct of a Foundation project during the 1950s to improve the efficacy of drug-type memory-processing agents. At that time, not only were memory processing drugs treated as a black box, but most human brain activity was as well, and several cases, including SCP-1500-JP-EX, were recorded as new anomalies, and the development of memory processing drugs that overcame the difficulties and the analysis of the black box were conducted.
It was not until the early 2000's that the mechanism of SCP-1500-JP-EX was elucidated. However, by that time, anomaly-derived amnestics were emerging as a cheaper and more powerful alternative, and the production of low-purity memory-treatment drugs in the 1950s itself was less significant, so SCP-1500-JP-EX-1 was not actually used for memory-treatment purposes in any instance.
Addendum: Current SCP-1500-JP-EX Usage
Due to its aforementioned history, SCP-1500-JP-EX has not been used as a pure memory processing agent. It is also not suitable for housing and subduing humanoid anomalies from the perspective of dosage control and the risks of inducing prolonged coma with the full extent of the anomaly are unknown.
However, when administering SCP-1500-JP-EX-1 to Foundation personnel, the problem of dosage control can be cleared by referring to the medical records of the medical department, and SCP-1500-JP-EX-1 can be used as a drug whose mechanism of action is almost completely understood, and which is relatively safe and capable of causing a patient to become comatose for about 1 to 2 weeks without any adverse effects.
In fact, several scenarios of stimulation protocols using SCP-1500-JP-EX-1 have been created in the Fire Suppression Department, some of which have been used several times in the past. As an example of an actual deployment of SCP-1500-JP-EX-1 by the Fire Suppression Department, the following is an excerpt from a recorded dialogue between a Fire Suppression Department agent and a target employee during the operation of the suppression protocol: “Children’s Limbo”.2

Date: 20██/██/██ ██:██
Location: Site-81 Medical Section
Participants: Fire Suppression Division Agent Kashiki, (former) Researcher Horihata
Foreword: Although former researcher Horihata was an excellent employee involved in the design of multiple object housing protocols, he volunteered to retire due to an adjustment disorder caused by continued viewing of images of lethal object affected persons in the course of his duties. He is now retired from the Foundation, although counseling and a bonus, including a benefits allowance, were offered to him. This loss of personnel has been deemed unacceptable by the Foundation and multiple suppression protocols are currently being implemented.
[BEGIN LOG]
Agt. Kashiki: How are you doing, Mr. Horihata? The medical department—
Horihata: What do you mean? Are you trying to get some kind of statement by giving me some medicine? I'm telling you, there's nothing more to talk about with you guys!
Agt. Kashiki: That is not the case, please calm down. Today, I have a video that I really want you to see.
Horihata: Then get on with it and show it to me. And get me back to where I belong as soon as possible.
[Agt. Kashiki does not reply and turns on the equipment connected to the monitor. A few seconds later, the monitor activates and shows an image of a ceremonial hall. Most of the figures in the image are relatives of former researcher Horihata, wearing mourning clothes.]
[There are several seconds of silence.]
Horihata: What is this?
Agt. Kashiki: As you can see, you are being cremated.
Horihata: No, that's not what I'm asking. How did you take these pictures?
Agt. Kashiki: Of course, during the two weeks that you were asleep, we properly conducted the ceremony, following the procedure from the declaration of death.
Horihata: [pause] Two weeks.
Agt. Kashiki: Yes, I know. After all, you were never cremated and were recovered inside the fake cremation furnace at the Foundation Front Funeral Home - but we are the only ones who know that. Ostensibly, you are legally dead.
Horihata: Don't be silly! Legally, then, what's life going to be like from now on?
Agt. Kashiki: Of course, your bank accounts have been frozen. Your personal phone and residence have also been cancelled. It would be impossible for you to receive any kind of welfare without a family register.
[About 20 seconds of silence. The video shows the scene of former researcher Horihata's sister speaking words of condolence at the closing ceremony.]
Horihata: Not yet. Not yet, if we can somehow contact my family.
Agt. Kashiki: Well, it might be perceived as a bad taste prank over the phone, but a face-to-face conversation might provide some assistance. It is more than 500 km from this site to your destination, but it might be possible if you earn money with a part-time day job that does not require identification.
Horihata: Right? Then—
Agt. Kashiki: However, in that case, I will make you unconscious again and transport you to the Site like this time. All items in your possession will be confiscated, and anyone you interact with will be amnesticized. Every time you do that, you will have to start a new life from scratch. Every time you get to my final resting place, over and over again.
[Again, about 20 seconds of silence. The video shows the moment the ceremony ends and the coffin window is closed.]
Agt. Kashiki: Well, let's see. I think I've given you a rough overview of the situation. I'm going to leave now, but you can stay a little longer if you like. Even though you have regained consciousness, your muscle strength has not yet fully recovered.
If you do not wish to return to work at the Foundation, please take your emergency contact device and exit through the back door of the facility. But if, hypothetically, you wish to return to work at the Foundation of your own volition! In that case, please let me know and I promise to proceed with the process as soon as possible.
No matter how many iterations it may take, we are eagerly awaiting your return.
[Agt. Kashiki leaves the room. During this time, former researcher Horihata remains silent.]
[The video ends at the moment the door of the cremation furnace is closed, and the loop playback function shows the image of the ceremonial hall again.]
[END LOG]
Afterword: Approximately 17 hours after this interaction, Horihata volunteered to be reinstated. Subsequent action was taken promptly and he is now reappointed to his previous position. The case is considered closed and the Fire Suppression Department's response at this time is limited to the application of a Grade 1 benefits allowance and follow-up.
