SCP-214-FR-A-04 and SCP-214-FR-A-07, respectfully from above and below

Item #: SCP-214-FR

Threat Level: None (Previously white )

Object Class: Neutralised (previously Keter)

Special Containment Procedures: Having been neutralised, SCP-214-FR does not necessitate any more containment measures. Nevertheless, any account reminiscent of SCP-214-FR must be examined by a committee of experts and submitted to the O5 council if deemed significant. The logging of any specimen of Sequoiadendron giganteum must be reported to the Foundation so that an agent to be infiltrated immediately in the lumber company to have a swift and appropriate response in case of a reappearance of the object.

The 8 remaining dead specimens of SCP-214-FR-A are kept at the biology department of Site-Aleph and are available after a demand is submitted to the conservationist. The recordings of SCP-214-FR-B are available for download on the Foundation's intranet to any personnel. Listening to these files is often prescribed to victims of post-traumatic stress disorder thanks to their appeasing virtues. Broadcasting the files is also allowed in break rooms but must be stopped in case of emergency so as to not impact personnel's reactivity.

Description: SCP-214-FR-A was a swarm of anomalous butterflies similar to Danaus plexipus of around █000 individuals. The main difference with other specimens of the species is the coloration of the wings, which are purple instead of orange. Most of the body is also slightly transparent, letting around 30% of visible light pass through. To this day, no specimen of SCP-214-FR-A has ever been seen feeding nor showing signs of malnutrition. Likewise, no mating has ever been reported and no egg, caterpillar, or chrysalid has ever been attributed to SCP-214-FR-A with certainty. Furthermore, the swarm switches between migration and rest phases following a seemingly random pattern (the minimum for a resting period being 26 minutes and the maximum 1 year, 4 months, and 12 days). During a phase switch, the whole colony stops or starts moving at the same time, suggesting a form of communication between the individuals.

Moreover, all individuals of SCP-214-FR-A constantly emit a wide variety of sounds audible by humans. These are usually considered by listeners as very pleasant music, designated SCP-214-FR-B. It has been shown that said sounds have numerous benefits for human subjects, including:

  • Significant sleep improvement
  • Stress reduction
  • Increase in pain tolerance
  • Focus improvement
  • Creativity increase
  • A feeling of bliss
  • Mental faculties increase
  • Memorisation improvement
  • Aggressivity decrease
  • Metapsychic capacities increase of ██ %

Each specimen emits an average noise level of around ██ dB, which is about 100 dB for SCP-214-FR-A as a whole, about the power of a jackhammer. Even though such an amount should cause damage to listeners, no alterations have ever been observed on any subject exposed to SCP-214-FR-B no matter the duration or distance from the colony. Furthermore, signs of habituation have yet to be seen among test subjects, although most of them show a strong desire to be exposed again to SCP-214-FR. Moreover, recordings of SCP-214-FR-B do not exhibit the anomalous properties of SCP-214-FR-B, despite still being considered very pleasant to listen to.

However, despite its potential regarding the Foundation's objectives, SCP-214-FR is mostly unusable due to the impossibility of safely containing SCP-214-FR-A in the long run. Indeed, specimens of SCP-214-FR-A have the property of being able to pass through any material known to us to this day. Thus, the whereabouts of the swarm are virtually uncontrollable. Moreover, it seems SCP-214-FR-A will always tend to move to populated areas, seemingly to have SCP-214-FR-B heard by as many people as possible. The motives of such behaviour are unknown as of yet, since no communication seems possible with the swarm as far as we know. Nonetheless, it has been shown that SCP-214-FR-A has a sensitivity to insecticides comparable to regular specimens of Danaus plexipus, especially dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT).

SCP-214-FR was discovered on 15/08/1960 in Sequoia National Park during the lumbering of a large specimen of Sequoiadendron giganteum. Witnesses report that the tree's trunk was hollow and SCP-214-FR-A came out of it as soon as it fell on the ground. The Foundation learnt the event 5 hours after the fact but it took two more days to track down the swarm. Indeed, it had flown for ███ km from the lumber site and it took the testimony of a child having heard a strange music in the woods to find it and set up a perimeter around the object. However, it was passed through by the swarm without any struggle mere hours later. On 20/08/1960, it had gone beyond the borders of the park. Two days later, a containment team took advantage of an idle phase of the swarm to build, in one night, a one-meter thick concrete chamber around it thanks to SCP-███. Unfortunately, SCP-214-FR-A was able to pass through its walls without struggle the next morning. The process was repeated 8 additional times with as little success. Given those failures and the tendency of the object to seek human contact, the Foundation's scientists ended up theorising that SCP-214-FR-A is actually drawn to population centres. Once this fact was settled, the anomaly was finally located near the small town of Bexton Gulch (now He-site) which is soon evacuated, claiming a seismic hazard in the area. The current containment procedures have been able to keep the entity in the area so far.

Update: On 30/01/1962, per the Bagotville Treaty (see Addendum 214-6), the area occupied by SCP-214-FR-A was sprayed with DDT. The entire swarm of SCP-214-FR-A was terminated, their body becoming tangible after their death. A dozen specimens were kept to be stuffed, the rest being incinerated. The object class of SCP-214-FR has been changed from "Keter" to "Neutralised".

Addendum 214-1: A few weeks after the initial containment of SCP-214-FR-A, the External Affairs Department received a letter from the PSYCHE Division of the Global Occult Coalition intended for the department head.

Addendum 214-2: Answer sent back by the DAE.

Addendum 214-3: Answer recieved a week later.

Addendum 214-4: Report of the 26/09/1961 event, also known as "Night of ashes"

Addendum 214-5: Summary of the events that arose between September 1961 and January 1962

Addendum 214-6: With the growing menace of a major conflict, two delegations from the GOC and the Foundation meet on 25/01/1962 at the CFB Bagotville airbase in Quebec, considered as neutral terrain by both parties. The negotiations last for 8 days and end with the Treaty of Bagotville5 (also called the Butterfly agreement) allowing to de-escalate the crisis.

Addendum 214-7: On 31/01/1962, the body of Dr. Fitzgerald, entomologist previously in charge of the containment of SCP-214-FR, is found in his office at He-site. The autopsy has shown that he shot himself with a sidearm stolen from Site-He's armoury. A letter hand-written on regulation Foundation mail paper was discovered next to the body.
