Item #: SCP-215-FR
Threat Level: Yellow ●
Objet Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-215-FR must be kept in a 20 cm x 30 cm x 20 cm aquarium. The water does not require regular changes as SCP-215-FR does not produce excrement and acclimatizes to its environmental temperature. Outside of testing, no elements of organic origin should be put in contact with the entity. During testing, only the elements presented to SCP-215-FR should be immersed.
Description: SCP-215-FR is an empty aluminum sardine can of the ███ brand, rectangular in shape, measuring 6 cm x 10 cm x 4 cm. It appears to have its own consciousness and adopts the behaviour of a Sardina pilchardus, despite the fact that it has neither locomotive limbs nor sensory organs. The entity also does not possess the natural needs of an animal life form, such as feeding, sleeping or breathing. However, extracting SCP-215-FR from water seems to damage it. When SCP-215-FR is removed from the water, a phenomenon of accelerated wear occurs: its surface becomes covered with rust and dented. Submerging the entity in water seems to reverse this process until it returns to its original state.
When an element of organic origin, which can be consumed by a human being, comes into contact with the water in which SCP-215-FR is submerged, the entity becomes aggressive and attempts to ingest part or all of the element, if it is small enough to be contained in SCP-215-FR in its entirety. The lid of the entity then opens, despite the fact that it is hermetically sealed, and the metal twists, to take on the appearance of a rudimentary jaw. SCP-215-FR then swims towards the element and tears off part of it, or swallows it whole. The maximum pressure exerted by the jaw of SCP-215-FR is estimated to be approximately 50 kg/cm2. The entity then closes its lid, returns to a calm state, adopting the behaviour of a Sardina pilchardus again, and temporarily no longer reacts to the immersion of organic elements. Noises, identified as similar to those produced by the machines used in canneries, coming from inside the entity, can be heard during this phase, despite the fact that an X-ray analysis has revealed that the inside of SCP-215-FR becomes empty again. The means used by SCP-215-FR to remove the ingested elements is unknown.
After a delay of about five minutes1, the entity ejects a small can containing the swallowed element (designated SCP-215-FR-2). This can and its contents will, in most cases, be identical to an existing can model. However, when a product that has never been canned before is ingested by SCP-215-FR, it generates a can belonging to a brand that has never existed before. It should be noted that the processing time is longer when this occurs.
SCP-215-FR also has the ability to incarnate itself in one of the instances it generates, for a limited time. The process then differs from the usual phenomenon. After ingestion, the entity remains in a passive state for several hours (this duration can vary between 3 hours and a day, the factor modifying this duration being unknown), before rejecting an instance (here named SCP-215-FR-3) adopting the behavior of the ingested animal or animal fragment, in the same way as SCP-215-FR, which becomes amorphous. It should be noted that SCP-215-FR will not create non-aquatic instances of SCP-215-FR-3 if the absorbed organism is not in a shallow water area. The generated instance will then regurgitate its contents and swallow SCP-215-FR2, keeping it intact. If this action is impossible, for example, if SCP-215-FR is far away from SCP-215-FR-3 in the meantime, then SCP-215-FR-3 will become an instance of SCP-215-FR-2, and SCP-215-FR will regain consciousness. SCP-215-FR-3 then moves to a fixed direction, identified as the city of ███████'█. After a time also varying between 3 hours and a day, depending on the initial generation time, SCP-215-FR-3 stops near a water source, and rejects SCP-215-FR, before losing its anomalous properties. The most plausible hypothesis about the precise destination of SCP-215-FR is "The Tip of ███████'█", a famous sardine cannery located at ███████'█.
SCP-215-FR was discovered following the testimony of a fishing couple from ████████, who had witnessed the regurgitation of SCP-215-FR by SCP-215-FR-3, in the form of canned chicken breast. The Foundation then contained it, approximately 40 kilometers from ███████'█, as it was generating a new instance of SCP-215-FR-3 on a beach after ingesting a seagull's wing. SCP-215-FR has since then only generated new instances of SCP-215-FR-3 outdoors, with terrestrial or flight-capable animals.
