Item #: SCP-249-DE
Object Class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures: All analogue media like newspapers and journals are to be reviewed before their publishment. If an instance of SCP-249-DE-1 is depicted, the medium, on which it was found, must be destroyed. Foundation web crawlers have to search the internet for instances of SCP-249-DE-1. In the event, that they find one, all IP addresses, that have accessed the respective website, are to be traced back and all individuals involved are to be amnesticised if they are not yet an instance of SCP-249-DE-2.
Agents embedded in police stations and hospitals should look for reports of possible SCP-249-DE-2- or -3-instances. If these reports are confirmed, the instances are to be contained and all witnesses amnesticised.
Instances of SCP-249-DE-2 are to be transported to Site-DE17 for testing purposes. They are to be treated as humanoid anomalies and the containment procedures are to be enacted accordingly. Tests are to be approved by at least two Level-3-Researchers.
Instances of SCP-249-DE-3 possess the same containment procedures as the instances of SCP-249-DE-2. Tests are not permitted unless they are approved by at least one Level-4-Researcher.
Description: SCP-249-DE designates a process in which the facial features of a person (eyes, nose, mouth, ears, hair) are interchanged with each other. During this process, the nostrils are treated as one facial feature and the tongue as well as the teeth stay in the mouth cavity. However, the two eyes as well as the ears are treated as two separate features for as of yet unknown reasons.
SCP-249-DE followed the same order in all previously recorded cases: First, each facial feature shrinks one after the other, until only skin is visible. The order is always different. After approximately one minute, the facial features begin to grow in other areas of the head. In rare cases, one or more facial features can grow in the same area as they were in before, although in no instance to date have all facial features been in their previous positions after the completion of SCP-249-DE.
When interchanging, the facial features adjust to the size of the facial feature that was originally in this position. All subjects, that underwent SCP-249-DE, describe the process as extremely painful and "as if every part in the face is slowly cut with a blunt knife and sewed onto another area". As long as the facial feature is still present, it seems to keep its respective function. Even after SCP-249-DE is finished, all facial features keep their sensory functions and the subjects still possess the ability to vocalise, although studies have shown, that the changed anatomy should not allow this and that the subject should not be able to breathe.
SCP-249-DE-1 designates the medium, on which the instructions for SCP-249-DE are found. Instances of SCP-249-DE-1 can appear in analogue (i.e. newspapers, journals etc.) or digital form (i.e. on Websites or in rare cases also in files). Before the screening of the analogue media for SCP-249-DE-instances, they always appeared in the advertisement section. The publishers of the media state that they have no knowledge about them and deny inserting the instructions. On the Internet new websites containing the instructions appear in intervals of two to three months. The IP addresses all lead to abandoned places in Germany and the instructions appear as red text on a white background. In addition to the instructions for the realisation of the process, its advantages are advertised by an as-of-yet unidentified person or company. This "advertisement" always seems to be tailored to the person it was intended for (see Addendum 249.1 for further details).
Subjects, that have undergone SCP-249-DE, are classified as SCP-249-DE-1-instances. Most subjects had an inferiority complex before the execution of SCP-249-DE and described a feeling of dissatisfaction with their face. There are reports of subjects, though, that have previously shown no signs of an inferiority complex and that have claimed to possess no problems with their looks. However, they did state to have felt a strong discomfort with their looks while reading an instance of SCP-249-DE-1. These claims lead to closer examinations of SCP-249-DE-1 and a minor memetic effect was discovered.
Addendum 249-DE.1: Instance of SCP-249-DE-1 (memetic effect removed)

| Test No. | Date | Subject(s) | Supervising researcher | Note | Results |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 07/09/2020 | D-3258 | Dr Plitz | Subject is missing both eyes. | Each facial feature is interchanged, including the eye sockets. |
| 2 | 10/09/2020 | D-3335 | Dr Plitz | Subject is missing an ear. | Empty position of the ear is interchanged with another facial feature. |
| 3 | 18/09/2020 | D-3459, D-3566 | Dr Plitz | This test was designed to find out what influence beards and bald heads have on the effects of SCP-249-DE. D-3459 had a moustache and D-3566 was bald. | D-3459's moustache was counted as the hair of the head and interchanged accordingly. However, the facial feature that had been interchanged with it (in this case the ear) has only occupied the area of the original hair. In the case of D-3566, after the application of SCP-249-DE, there was a nose in the position of the bald area and in the place where the nose had been, there was only skin. |
| 4 | 23/09/2020 | D-4774, D-5719, D-6338, D-7709 | Dr Plitz | The purpose of this test was to examine how accessories are affected by SCP-249-DE. D-4774 wore glasses, D-5719 contact lenses, D-6338 a hat and D-7709 earrings. | As the nose and ears were interchanged, D-4774's glasses fell off because they had no longer a place to hold onto. The contact lenses and earrings seemed to be counted as facial features and stayed in the eyes and ears, respectively, while adjusting to the new size of them. The hat of D-6338 stayed on the head and kept its size. |
| 5 | 02/10/2020 | D-8983 | Dr Plitz | Dr Plitz proposed to remove D-8983's ears, eyes and nose with a surgical procedure and sew up the points of incisions. Next, he wanted to remove the hair and sew up the mouth. The Ethics Committee vetoed this proposal and the O4 Council also rejected it because the eye sockets were swapped in Test 1 and the facial feature remnants and scars would probably also be swapped in this test. Dr Plitz still conducted the test by falsifying an authorisation and assembling a team of surgeons and was subsequently degraded to the position of a Junior Researcher. | The remnants and scars of the facial features were interchanged just like the O4-Council had predicted. |
| 6 | 06/10/2020 | SCP-249-DE-2-292 | Dr Giorgio | This test examined what happened when an instance of SCP-249-DE-2 undergoes SCP-249-DE for a second time. | [Redacted] (see Addendum 249-DE.3) |
