Special Concealment Procedures

The properties of SCP-2904-JP and its associated facts are classified as top priority confidential information. Liaison personnel in charge of SCP-2904-JP are granted authority over matters such as budget allocations and personnel transfers at major research institutions, allowing them to take control of research capabilities related to SCP-2904-JP.

A small number of undercover agents are to be dispatched to various media outlets, including prominent academic journals, to establish a system of information control in which only new materials that have passed censorship is allowed to be published, in an effort to maintain a stable public market.

Description

SCP-2904-JP is a collective name for genome sequences shared by all breeds of domestic pigs (Sus scrofa domesticus) that are distributed in the public market for meat. Analysis has revealed that it is not a variation based on the natural selection theory, but rather originates from a paratechnology that exceed modern genetic engineering.

SCP-2904-JP induces severe growth inhibition of organ systems, mainly in the pharynx and limbs. This causes the final development rate of SCP-2904-JP-Positive pigs to be suppressed to approximately 8-10%, resulting in them ending their lives without acquiring or demonstrating their natural abilities1. Since 99.99% of the pigs on the public market are SCP-2904-JP-Positive instances, it is highly unlikely that their developmental delay will be pointed out during normal medical examinations.

A pig in Non-SCP-2904-JP status (at Site-FF09, Barn #11).

On 2015/03/15, ten pigs in Non-SCP-2904-JP status were created and raised as a comparison in order to accurately observe the influence extent of SCP-2904-JP. The following growth processes were generally observed in all instances.

Status Notable details
Fetus They showed the same developmental progress as SCP-2904-JP-Positive instances until two weeks after fertilization, after which significant development of their limbs was observed, such as elongation of the phalanges.
2 months Their limbs developed into functional shapes with better grasping capability, enabling them to hold onto simple shapes such as rubber balls. They also showed interest in other instances, and were frequently observed to communicate with each other through gestures.
4 months Their proficiency in limb manipulation had improved to the point where they were able to engage in precision play, such as creating a perfectly spherical ball of mud. Although it was difficult to distinguish from normal pig calls, repetitive babbling-like vocalizations were frequently observed.
10 months In addition to babbling, vocalizations of words that frequently appeared in conversations between Foundation personnel were also confirmed. When several words were taught as part of the learning ability measurement, the instances successfully learned all of them after several days of repetition. Some understanding of the word definitions was also observed.
18 months They had almost completely acquired meaningful words, and were frequently observed conversing not only with the personnel, but also with other instances. They seemed to be self-aware of their growing personalities, such as diversified emotional expressions and fixation on specific subjects.
After 30 months There is little difference in their basic behavior from that of humans. When the photographs of SCP-2904-JP-Positive pigs were presented as part of an experiment, all instances were highly stressful and generally described them sympathetically as "our companions with difficult disabilities, such as missing or underdeveloped limbs." As they subsequently began to accuse several personnel about the photographs, partial amnesticization was applied.

Based on the above-mentioned observations, it has been concluded that pigs in Non-SCP-2904-JP status display remarkable developmental patterns not found in ordinary animals — such as the formation of social structures beyond simple physical differences, more complex preferences, and unique thoughts similar to human personality — which have been retained since an unknown period after the establishment of the species. As for their original functional organ systems, it is speculated that they accidentally underwent rapid development through multiple breeding efforts in the mid-20th century, when the livestock industry was at its peak, based on subsequent research materials.

On 2018/01/09, the aforementioned instances demanded an immediate improvement in their current living conditions, using their refusal to take their regular intelligence tests as a negotiating factor. In response, SCP-2904-JP Research Team reclassified the instances from "experimental subjects" to "highly intelligent organisms" and accepted their demands as legitimate. Except for one instance that died as a result of an escape attempt, the remaining nine instances were individually transferred to a modified version of the standard humanoid containment cell, and are currently being contained according to a dedicated manual.

Addendum.2904-JP.2

During an unknown period in the 1960s, several livestock breeding companies and their subsidiaries, which had been successful at the time, reportedly distributed the first generation of SCP-2904-JP-Positive pigs worldwide under the pretext of breeding improvement, and then rapidly expanded their distribution.

At the time of this revision, there are still many businesses that originated from these companies; however, all of them have completely withdrawn from the livestock industry, and the relevant research materials have already been destroyed. The individuals suspected of being involved in this series of events and their families have also disappeared after their activities, rendering the investigation into the origin of SCP-2904-JP difficult.

Addendum.2904-JP.3

At the time this report was drafted, the development of a Special Containment (Concealment) Procedure had been temporarily postponed due to a dispute at the conference over the response policy. However, as the investigation progressed and in light of Addendum 2904-JP.1, the current system was established for two reasons: 1. physical containment was not possible due to the distribution scale, and 2. disclosure of these facts would lead to massive disruption of the general market and economic collapse of pig farming.

Subsequently, SCP-2904-JP Research Team proposed to enhance the Special Concealment Procedure, citing the fact that the pig's self-awareness and memory abilities have been generally regarded as extremely advanced even before the discovery of SCP-2904-JP, and therefore it could be exposed within a few decades that pigs possess intelligence equal to or greater than that of humans. Following the discussion, it was concluded that while their concerns should not be disregarded, SCP-2904-JP-Positive pigs do not have functional organs that would allow them to behave in a clearly intelligent manner, and therefore it would be relatively easy to defuse the situation even if a certain level of intelligence were revealed; as such, the proposal was tabled.

By the time of this revision, some cases of concern have been identified, such as the rise of veganism which rejects the use of animal products; however, the impact on the public market has been very minor, and research capacity on pigs has been only modestly improved. As this has proven the effectiveness of the aforementioned conclusions and the Special Concealment Procedure, the current system is expected to be maintained.
