Item #: SCP-297-DE

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: Area 297-A is to be held in complete silence at all times. This invariably excludes any source of sound. In principle, entry to Area 297-B is prohibited, without first having gone trough procedure Creeper and having been appropriately equipped and instructed. Sentries are to be placed in Area 297-C, and be equipped with soundless resources such as chloroform, to hinder unauthorized intruders as quietly as possible.

Personnel stationed at 297-C has to wield sound measuring devices per DIN EN 61672-1:2014-07; the functionality of whom must be verified after every shift. Every staff is receives a device to counteract the failure of another. In case of the sound pressure exceeding the set factor of 40 db in Area 297-C, emergency protocol 297 will immediately be initiated, and the whole site cleared. All present employees have 10 minutes to follow the aforementioned instructions.

A sound pressure may not exceed 15 db inside the containment chamber, as only 5 db are sustainable inside the anomaly.

Both Area 297-A as well as the containment chamber must be completely video monitored. Solely cameras that are rigidly aligned and do not possess any internal motors or other moveable parts are to be utilized. Given that no panning or optical zooming is possible, enough cameras may be attached to precisely monitor all edges of the floor and exterior of the containment chamber of SCP-297-DE. The cameras must be equipped with fisheye lenses, at least feature a quality of 3840x2160 pixels, with their color management being checked on a regular basis. Malfunctioning devices are to be promptly replaced. For this purpose, spare devices are shall always inhabit a functional state.

All equipment is either mounted onto stable tripods with soft rubber feet or attached to walls and ceiling via strong glue. The former procedure is to be favored to prevent unintentional detachment.

If a part of SCP-297-DE leaks the containment chamber through careless closing of the door, it is to be re-captured using simple mechanical manual means.

Per Performer protocol and emergency protocol 297, a discoloration from orange up to a dark red is to be answered with immediate evacuation.

Description: SCP-297-DE designates a highly combustible, sluggish, odorless, orange gas which can transcend into an aggressive state through acoustic means. It is currently located inside Site-DE24. Until the 20/05/20██, a locked pressure tank was also present inside, containing the respective anomaly therein.

Through a containment breach of SCP-███-DE, the pressure tank was damaged, leaking the gas.1

The area immediately around the containment chamber of SCP-297-DE is designated as SCP-297-A. At the end of this floor, Area SCP-297-DE-B begins and extends until the next lock, where SCP-297-C begins. This area is extends over the remaining wing of the site. The last stationary outposts are placed outside of this entry. With every area, starting with 297-C, the demands for on-duty personnel increase, with the permissible sound pressure decreasing.

Excluding its explosivity, SCP-297-DE is not harmful for humans, and does not cause any irritations or other symptoms. It can be inhaled or swallowed, without directly causing symptoms. The threat during inhalation stems from the fact that either too few or no oxygen is consumed, ultimately resulting in death through asphyxiation.

Through its high density of approx. 15 kg/m3, it always rests at the bottom of the chamber and currently covers a height of around 80 cm thereon. The distinct coloration allows for early detection of any leaks. Furthermore, SCP-297-DE's relative inertia allows, even without using an air ventilation, entry into the cell, without a part leaks. If this occurs nonetheless, it is to be contained per Creeper Protocol.

The volatile nature of SCP-297-DE necessitates extreme calm. The closer the source of sound is brought to the anomaly, the more sensitive it reacts. Sounds in the direct proximity to SCP-297-DE may not exceed a sound pressure of 5 db, otherwise there is risk of ignition.

How much gas explodes depends on the volume of the source that has caused the effect. In itself, SCP-297-DE's explosion does not trigger any additional burnings of the same. A sound pressure of 10 db inside of SCP-297-DE will radiate for around 10 cm in all directions, before ignition sets in.

As soon as sound pressure has become high enough to activate SCP-297-DE, the anomaly takes on another tint in the affected area. The previously lush orange would then become notably darker, almost reddish. Once this discoloration has become visible, 10 minutes remain to retrieve from the affected area, before an explosion occurs. It is essential that personnel does not panic in this situation, and possibly activates other areas, but instead swiftly and controlled exits the chamber.2

SCP-297-DE's explosion does not emit any sound by itself that could cause further inflammations, though, it is indirectly able to. Should material surrounding SCP-297-DE, such as the floor or walls of the cell, be damaged by the reaction of SCP-297-DE, falling debris could create new explosions. If this occurs, emergency protocol 297 must be carried out, as an uncontrollable chain reaction is imminent that could destroy large parts of the site.

At time of writing, attempts are being made to securely store SCP-297-DE inside a sound-proof container. Due to the strongly volital properties of SCP-297-DE, and the necessity to have personnel enter the cell to protect the site, any personnel in this position may subject themselves to the following preparation.

Creeper Protocol: In order to minimize any sound when entering the containment cell of SCP-297-DE, all possible sound sources must be eliminated as far as possible. This primarily includes the personal himself, who extracts SCP-297-DE from the cell to securely store it.

For this purpose, special clothing is available which is free from any metallic parts such as zippers or buttons. Additionally, it has to be very soft to prevent possible crease sounds. Shoes may not be worn. Cotton socks are provided to counteract the abrasion or crease sounds of synthetic soles or the occasional sticking of naked feet soles on the floor.

Furthermore, all staff may be trained to control their breathing, only taking calm periodic breaths. Even before entering the exterior sections, all cough stimuli are to be eradicated, with the respiratory system being cleared to prevent potential sneezing. To this end, both hypoallergenic detergents as well as airway expanding nasal sprays are available inside a cleanroom. Personnel suffering from Polyposis nasi (Nasal polyps) or similar infections of the respiratory system such as asthma bronchiale are not suitable for this procedure.

Especially the lower extremities located directly inside SCP-297-DE must be kept supple. For this purpose, sport massages are to be applied shortly before commencement to, inter alia, prevent articular neck, ensuring that the respective personal will swiftly but silently move in case of emergency. This is of especial importance when a part of SCP-297-DE enters an animated state and subsequently shifts in color. Processing personnel must be schooled about this fact to keep calm. Provided that the area is not larger than 30 cm and has a distance of at least half the diameter from floor to wall, there is no acute reason to initiate emergency protocol 297.

Personnel instructed beforehand must remove SCP-297-DE via simple mechanic means by the piece. Through the high density, solely plain glass container are necessary that can be closed using a flat overlaying rubber. Said rubber may not be a plug, as the friction of materials on each other would create a certain noise. The closure of the container therefore only succeeds through pure physical strength, and has to be freshly stored as a result.

Automated methods to discover SCP-297-DE cannot be justified due to engine and drive noises. In addition, no pumps may be used, as sounds of circulation noises are enough to inflame parts of the anomaly. It is thus highly likely that the equipment would be damaged, forcing the site to initiate emergency protocol 297.

Emergency Protocol 297: Should SCP-297-DE be activated in a way that provokes a coloration of an area with a diameter of at least 30 cm, the explosive force of the anomaly and the associated degree of destruction finally leading to the combustion of the whole containment chamber's contents would leave no hope surrounding personnel or the building integrity, wherefore all employees have to exit the building, at best, leading to evacuation of the building at a whole.

However, emergency sirens or similar alarms may still be dispensed of to prevent a simultaneous activation of the whole stock of SCP-297-DE. When During activation of a critical mass, at least two smaller explosions would be present. If, however, the whole contents of the containment chamber is activated at once, the consequences would be considerably graver. Therefore, radio contact must be relied upon and it must be expected that human losses will occur. Hence, visual means such as warning lights of different models are utilized, and all staff is to be schooled about the meaning of whom.

Addendum 297-DE-1: On the 20.05.20██, a containment breach of SCP-███-DE occurred at Site-DE24, which, among other physical damages, provided a certain noise level, so that the chamber of SCP-297-DE has been damaged through an explosion of the outermost layer. This damage sufficed to create a leak, through which the majority of SCP-297-DE could freely escape. All surrounding anomalies were re-located to keep the noise as low as possible, with the security protocols being adapted, as the previously protective container could not provide protection.

Through the upright position of the container, it is also theorized that a part of SCP-297-DE is still contained therein. Due to both the initial damages as well as the surrounding mass of the anomaly inside the containment chamber, said part would also be pressureless, and is, as a result, limited to only 30 liters.
