SCP-331-FR

Item #: SCP-331-FR

Threat Level: Green

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: The five remaining SCP-331-FR kits must be stored in a Safe Class locker at Site-Aleph, locked with a key assigned to Senior Researcher Kellen.

Live specimens must be kept separately in aquariums larger than 30cm in diameter, placed in a room with no opening to the outside and closed at night.
Aquariums should be filled with fresh water with an addition of 14g of caster sugar per week for feeding purposes.
The aquarium and water should be changed every two months, while the room should be properly cleaned every week.

No SCP-331-FR instances are currently contained.

All kits found in possession by civilians are to be seized and returned to Site-Aleph for storage.

Description: SCP-331-FR refers to a species of jellyfish very similar to the genus Pelagia noctiluca, with an umbrella reaching 10cm in diameter at adulthood. Their 19cm long tentacles are totally devoid of nematocyst, making them completely non-urticating and harmless. Instances have a very pronounced purple color gradient as well as a stylized golden "W", probably organic in origin, on the top of its umbrella.

SCP-331-FR is inactive during the day, where they usually just feed on sugar1 and rest. However they become much more active during the night2, on top of exposing their anomalous behavior.

The immediate anomalous ability of SCP-331-FR instances is its ability to leave an aquatic environment and move without difficulty or any damage in the air. The entity always seems to be in a liquid when it floats, in particular because it continues to move in beats and because of the waving pattern it exerts on its umbrella and tentacles, in addition to maintaining the same speed as in water.
There does not seem to be a limit as to the distance that SCP-331-FR can travel, it nevertheless shows a preference for the perimeter of the room in which it left its pool.

A few minutes after starting to float in the air, SCP-331-FR will gradually start to produce bioluminescence.

Its average luminous flux has been measured at 23 lumens (equivalent to the illumination produced by a small child's night light), with peaks of 57 lumens observed at seemingly random intervals, resulting in faint flashes of light. The reason for these light spikes is unknown, although they appear to become much less frequent as the instance ages.

The instances are extremely docile and, more surprisingly, seem aware of their environment and in particular of the human beings around them.
In fact, the instances avoid obstacles before hitting them and concentrate their activities in particular around children, circling around them and sometimes performing small tricks.4.
SCP-331-FR only performs these tricks when its viewer is awake, simply rotating slowly in a circle above them when asleep.
The instances are described as soft and pleasant to the touch, and also seem to appreciate being touched. Rough handling can however damage and injure instances of SCP-331-FR.

SCP-331-FR usually returns to its bowl or basin it left at daybreak, then ceasing all abnormal activity.
Interestingly, an entity that is overly stressed (nearby speech or interaction with the bowl) during its resting phase will be significantly less active during the night, displaying slower movement speed and a weaker luminosity.

SCP-331-FR has an estimated lifespan of 8 months when raised in good conditions.(Refer to Addendum 331-B).
The instances exhibits increasingly shorter nocturnal activity as it nears its expiration. It is notable that it usually attempts to go outside and gain altitude before dying.

Children who sleep in the presence of SCP-331-FR report being better rested and less afraid of the dark. An increase in morale is quickly noticeable through repeated exposure with the instance, as well as being more inclined to sleep.
It is even possible to observe an emotional bond being built between the child and the instance, and particularly on the instance's side which gets closer to the child during its active phases.

Addendum 331-A: Discovery

SCP-331-FR was discovered in the city of ██████, along other anomalies belonging to the group "Dr. Wondertainment" (notably several boxes of SCP-111 as well as SCP-████).
Two households had a total of three kits to produce instances of SCP-331-FR, only one of the two households had given birth to an instance. The instance was reclassified SCP-331-FR-1 (expired on ██/██/20██) and was used for the majority of tests that helped understand it further.

The kits were seized and those responsible for their purchase were questioned, revealing that they were obtained through a traveling salesman associated with Dr. Wondertainment. The latter is currently being sought out by the Foundation.
Residents who were exposed to the anomalies or who came into contact with the seller have been administered amnestics.

Addendum 331-B: Documents found in the SCP-331-FR kit

Addendum 331-C:

Everything suggests that SCP-331-FR is not a product entirely designed by the group "Dr. Wondertainment". The anomalies that we are used to see from them more or less follow a particular and typical pattern. These animals look… normal compared to what this group generally produces. We actually think that it comes from another world, where it would perhaps represent a species in its own right, from which Dr. Wondertainment would have made some "adjustments" to make it a toy. The mention of this "Father of all Jellyfishes" is not insignificant either. We do not know if it is a group or a person, or even an entity with which Dr. Wondertainment has actually associated himself, nor if other collaborations between them are currently planned. - Senior Researcher Kellen
