Dolomite Mountains.
Item #: SCP-3844-JP
Object Class: Pending
Special Containment Procedures: As appropriate facilities for SCP-3844-JP are currently under construction, SCP-3844-JP is currently contained at its original residence. In order to prevent civilians from coming into contact with SCP-3844-JP, a 100m x 100m perimeter is to be patrolled regularly by Foundation personnel under the cover of being "Mountaineer Guards"
Description: SCP-3844-JP is a large reptilian creature inhabiting a cavern within the Dolomite Mountains in Italy.
According to observations, despite lacking the bare minimum levels of food, excretion, and exercise required to sustain an organism of its size, SCP-3844-JP continues to survive regardless, due to currently unknown factors. Furthermore, SCP-3844-JP has never left its cavern. It is also known to be at least 73 meters in length, although a direct measurement from outside the cavern is currently impossible, due to SCP-3844-JP's skin both absorbs and nullifies radio waves and radiation.
During the 17th Century, a village on the foothills of the mountain was destroyed, and surviving records describe the incident to be caused by a "Black Dragon". Before the existence of SCP-3844-JP was confirmed, these records were thought to be from a lack of scientific understanding of natural disasters, and it was originally concluded that the village was destroyed by a volcanic eruption of some sort.
Addendum I: The following is an excerpt of experiment records conducted for the purpose of studying the ecology of SCP-3844-JP.
Experiment Lead: Dr. Gray
Summary: An investigation team consisting of 5 trained D-Class personnel was dispatched into the cave to confirm a detailed ecology of SCP-3844-JP.
Result: Upon entering the caverns, all team members were blown away by a large roaring noise generated immediately upon the team's entrance to the cave, and all members died upon impact. This roaring sound is believed to originate from SCP-3844-JP itself. The temporary research base established in the area was also destroyed. Damage to research staff and equipment was also sustained.
Notes: Entering the cave may trigger a hostile reaction from SCP-3844-JP
Experiment Lead: Dr. Gray
Summary: A survey team consisting of 3 trained D-Class personnel, equipped with Foundation-made Grade II anti-impact suits was dispatched into the cave to confirm a detailed ecology of SCP-3844-JP.
Result: Upon entering the caverns, all team members were blown away by a large roaring noise. One member died on impact. Unlike the last experiment, no noticeable damage occurred to the newly refurbished research base outside.
Notes: It is possible to counter SCP-3844-JP's hostile reaction if properly equipped.
Experiment Lead: Dr. Gray
Summary: A survey team consisting of 5 trained D-Class personnel, equipped with Foundation-made Grade III anti-impact suits was dispatched into the cave to confirm a detailed ecology of SCP-3844-JP.
Result: One D-Class, ignoring instructions, yelled into the cave from outside. In response, a roaring noise was generated that blew all members away. All team members died on impact. This roar was noted to be higher-pitched and louder than previous experiments.
Notes: The reaction of SCP-3844-JP did not seem hostile. In fact, it is possible that this roar was a response towards the D-Class's behavior. See Addendum II.
Addendum II: Vocal analysis of SCP-3844's roar in the previous experiment revealed that it resembled the Latin language of the word "What is it?", possibly confirming that communication is possible with SCP-3844-JP. Below are the results of an interview conducted with the subject:
INTERVIEW LOG 3844-JP
Record 20██/██/██
Interviewee: SCP-3844-JP
Interviewer: D-93627
Foreword: D-93627 was selected due to his background of speaking medieval Latin. D-93627 is equipped with a Foundation-made Grade V anti-impact suit modified with loudspeakers and secured with a lifeline in case of impact accidents.
[Begin Recording]
Interviewer: If anyone's home, please respond.
SCP-3844-JP: Welcome to my abode, human!
[Interviewer's body is flown back due to shockwave]
Interviewer: Could you please lower your voice?
SCP-3844-JP: Ah, my apologies. It's been so long since I've spoken with a human, I simply got excited.
Interviewer: [In a whispered voice, receiving instructions on comms] Understood. [Speaking towards the cave] How long since you've encountered humans?
SCP-3844-JP: Hmm, I neglected to count the cycles of the sun and the moon before I came to this cave, but some time must have passed, judging from your clothing, for humans to have changed their lifestyle choices. There used to be a village around here. I visited it once.
Interviewer: Do you mean the village by the foothills?
SCP-3844-JP: Precisely the one! I'm surprised it's still standing.
Interviewer: Can you explain why you "visited" the village?
SCP-3844-JP: Hmm, for a long time I soared across the heavens. The sky stretches endlessly, and the Earth is a beautiful undulation of shapes and vivid colors. Ever since I was born from the gap between the Earth and the sky, this was all I witnessed.
But then I heard tell of strange creatures that multiplied rapidly. A creature that did not fear fire, and hunted other creatures with their own claws and fangs made of stone and metal. Before long, these animals felled trees, destroyed mountains, and expanded their habitat. I learned then that they called themselves 'humans'.
Interviewer: So, you destroyed their village because of anger? Perhaps at the humans tainting nature with their selfish desires?
SCP-3844-JP: What? No, of course not. Why would I do that?
Interviewer: Then did you destroy them for food? Did you think your home was threatened?
SCP-3844-JP: Nothing of the sort. I'm comfortable with dying, I just wanted a friend.
Interview: I'm sorry, a friend?
SCP-3844-JP: I am a powerful being. Neither boiling lava nor sky-splitting lightning can pierce my hide. With a single breath, I could create raging winds that carve ravines across mountains. With two swings of my wings, I could surpass any winged creature and soar to the stars. With a few steps, I could create an earthquake large enough to make the Earth roar in return. There were no creatures that did not fear me.
Therefore, I did not believe there was an equal who would be able to see the world as I was. I had no one by my side.
I once dreamed of others as myself, as most creatures were born from their mother's womb. But no matter how far I searched, I could not find another of my kind.
And then, these small miniscule creatures were able to burn down forests, carve mountains, and alter the flow of rivers. I have never seen a race of beings like this before me. I was overjoyed. At last, there was a creature that could become an equal in this world.
Interviewer: …So you went to the village to "visit" it?
SCP-3844-JP: Yes. I observed from afar, learning "Language". That is human-speak, of course. Next, I learned etiquette, how not to say anything rude to humans. Finally, I learned how to smile, to show I'm not hostile.
It took me a long time to learn, but that was nothing compared to the pain and loneliness I experienced all this time. Finally, when I was confident in my abilities, I landed, and shouted. "Hello humans! Let us be friends!
Interviewer: And then what happened?
SCP-3844-JP: I blew everything away.
Interviewer: Ah…
SCP-3844-JP: I have failed. It dawned on me that humans may not be as resilient as I expected, or perhaps their resilience required time to grow, and they are currently unable to stand side-by-side with me. Therefore, in order to not harm humans until they are ready, I carved out a cavern for myself, and lived my life here.
Interviewer: You shut yourself in? It wasn't sealed by some wizard or anything like that?
SCP-3844-JP: If I were to come out now, I could, if you'd like.
Interviewer: I'd rather you no— [Receiving instructions. Sighs] Doctor, are you sure? Wouldn't it be better if we don't?
SCP-3844-JP: What is the matter?
Interviewer: Um, my partner would like to know more about you, so he'd like you to come out and be escorted to the facility.
SCP-3844-JP: [Short silence] Shall I take that as an invitation?
Interviewer: I suppose?
SCP-3844-JP: Ohoho! [Roars]
[Interviewer's body is blown away]
Interviewer: Wait a minute—
SCP-3844-JP: At last, the humans have seen fit to welcome me into their ranks. Come to think of it, I've never been able to communicate with humans before, and now you've created suits that can withstand my roars! Surely you can create buildings that can withstand my wings! I can finally shake hands with humans without tearing them apart with my claws!
[Three large protrusions appeared from the interior of the cave, cutting the rim of the entrance]
Interviewer: [Gasps]
SCP-3844-JP: I will accept this offer! Oh, I'm so excited, human!
[Two more light orbs appear, which morph into what appear to be eyes flickering with flaming lights. There is also a huge mouth beneath it]
Interviewer: [Screams]
SCP-3844-JP: Let us be friends, human!
[Roaring and screaming continue, video becomes corrupted]
[END RECORDING]
The above recording was found in the wreckage of the now-destroyed SCP-3844-JP temporary research base. When SCP-3844-JP was questioned, its response was "I apologize" and "It appears humans need more time." Dr. Jeremy, Dr. Gray's replacement, made the following comments:
"Regarding SCP-3844-JP. I believe that further interference will only create unnecessarily high risks for casualties. Current Foundation technology is unable to do much more than leave the subject feeling hurt and remorseful. That dragon hasn't killed anyone in centuries, not until we came for it.
I suggest we leave it be. It is doing a much better job at containing itself than we could ever hope to."
The proposal to classify SCP-3844-JP is still pending as we await further experiment results.
