A wild instance of SCP-397-DE
Item #: SCP-397-DE
Object Class: Keter
Special Containment Procedures: Two SCP-397-DE instances are being contained within glass terrariums measuring 3 m x 3 m x 3 m in Site-DE6. To simulate an environment familiar to the instances, the terrariums are filled with dirt and sporadic stones. The male is to be provided with a rat on a bi-weekly basis, while the female is to be supplied with 10 kg of grass within the same time span. Two full-body hazmat suits are to be present within an anteroom, which are to be worn while feeding the instances and cleaning the cell. There must always be two employees present who have to examine each other for potential bites after the completion of their tasks. In case of a female bite and penetration of the spinal cord, the cerebrospinal fluid1 is to be drawn from the vesicle and stored within the medical wing. The affected employee is to be transferred to one week of quarantine to exclude any possible pathogenic infections.
Civil occurrences of nests must be neutralized using chemical pesticides to be distributed via spraying guns, with the female SCP-397-DE instances to be removed from their hosts.
Description: SCP-397-DE designates a scorpion-like organisms of unknown taxonomical classification with a conspicuous sexual dimorphism, which is manifested through insectoid wings in the sexual mature females between the third and fourth segment of the tergites.2 Excluding the sexual maturity, variations can also be found in the thickness of the claws, which are significantly thicker and robust in females and rather narrow and long in male instances. But all instances share a size of 10 cm as well as a black coloration. The anus is present beneath the fifth sternum.3 The modus vivendi of SCP-397-DE instances is akin to that of ants, as they also construct subterranean structures with tunnels and chambers for various purposes, but a hierarchical structure featuring workers and soldiers is missing.
Females follow a herbivorous diet or consume flower nectar, while the males draw blood from large mammals. To find a fitting host, the males are dependent on the females who initially land on the host's back. Once there, they borrow their stinger through its skin, while the metasoma4 continues to lengthen anomalously to move the stinger into deeper layers of the body. Eventually, the stinger reaches the spinal column and also pierces it, whereupon it will draw a small amount of cerebrospinal fluid and store it within the vesicle.5 Afterwards the metasoma will be retracted, followed by the instance flying back to the nest and secreting the cerebrospinal fluid. Males who consume said liquid will obtain knowledge concerning all habits of the host through an unknown process, including eating and sleeping times. This is evident from the fact that all previous victims were ambushed when they were alone and away from possible help.
Prior to an attack, the male and female instances build tunnels beneath the host's house and examine it for gaps, whereby floorboards and thin walls have also been damaged via claws. During the attack, all male instances in its vicinity crawl on the host, cling onto it with their claws and bore their stingers in its skin, whereupon they begin to suck blood. The stinging pain is similar to bee stings, but the saliva has a local anesthetic effect on the pain. Due to the number of instances and the surprise effect, the host is usually incapable of halting the attack and will instead attempt to remove the instances, which often leads to skin loss and exsanguination. The host perishes from anemia after 5 - 10 minutes. All instances will subsequently retreat to their nest. Depending on the size of the ambushed host, a meal can saturate the instances for two weeks to a month.
Discovery: The first human victim of SCP-397-DE registered by the Foundation was Markus Holth who recorded his experiences in an internet blog, which can be found within the addendum below, and thus drew the attention of the Foundation onto him. Once agents arrived at his residence, they discovered the victim dead and anemic next to a terrarium an SCP-397-DE instance was seemingly trapped in, which was subsequently transported to Site-DE6. The death could be disguised as a suicide, as the neighbors already suspected he had gone insane.
Addendum/397-DE-01: Internet Blog by Markus Holth
Hello guys! I started this blog because I've been discovering weird holes in my wallpaper. They're always right at the bottom and almost look like mouse holes from some cartoon. There are also some in the floorboards of the same size: 20 cm. Maybe the material within the walls is starting to deteriorate or something like that, I don't know. Apart from that, I've been feeling an intense itch in the middle of my back for two days. Probably just a mosquito bite.
Thanks for your helpful comments! Some of you said there could be woodworms, which is why I sprayed a boron salt solution on the holes. I then filled the holes themselves with provisionally with filler and hope that's it. I'll visit the doctor after work tomorrow, because that bite looked pretty big and red in the mirror.
So, the doctor took a look at the spot and noticed a strange liquid, which turned out to be brain fluid. He was quite surprised that I didn't feel it, but after a look on my medical history he remembered that I have analgesia.6 Next he prepared me for a lumbar puncture and extracted some brain fluid. It seems I suffer from chronic post-dural-puncture headache due to a small hole in my spine where brain fluid is leaking. He then prescribed me theophylline and bed rest. I hope I'll stay sane.
When I came back home, I was in for the next shock. The holes were open again! Every single one! I'll take care of that tomorrow.
I just wanted to go out to today to check the mail box, but the sun somehow looks much brighter. I had to cry because of the pain in my eyes, which is wherefore I headed back in. Probably related to my condition, which is why I drew all the curtains and lowered the blinds. I'm glad that I'm spared the rest of the pain the syndrome involves. When it's completely quiet, I hear silent scurrying, but can't quite pinpoint from where. Who- or whatever had stung my back, isn't done with me.
I can't leave my house anymore. If I try, I only hear crunching, but nothing is moving. Call me crazy, but I think there are crawlies in the walls. When I press my ear against the wall, I can very clearly hear scuttling and scratching. Those aren't woodworms, that's for sure, because those critters don't have legs and can't sting. The best thing I could do is to tear them open and kill these creatures.
I could remove a piece of wall with a pickax from my basement and found a small black scorpion. Trapped him inside my terrarium that a lizard should originally inhabit, but these beasts have gone in the way. It instantly began building corridors in the dirt like an ant and also didn't want to eat anything I offered. I believe we're getting closer to solving this mystery.
The scuttling has become more intense. It sounds like a horde of scorpions. I'm scared to death and ask anyone to help me out. I'm not spinning anything together here to entertain you like a creepypasta. I neefuck there are so Many
