SCP-789-JP, photo taken in Dr. Kurauchi's laboratory
Item #: SCP-789-JP
Object Class: Möbius
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-789-JP is to be stored in a low-threat item locker at Site-8195.
Description: SCP-789-JP is a commercial-standard rubber band manufactured by ██████ Inc. It was purchased by Site-8195 Supplies Management Division and supplied to the laboratory of Dr. Kurauchi, who works at the site.
SCP-789-JP's anomalous properties manifest when its anomalous properties are described in the Foundation's standard format report and then an object class is assigned to it; the writer inevitably places the word "Möbius" in the object class section. The writer - whether in doubt about the content of the report or even when the issue is pointed out by others - eventually comes to the conclusion that neither the object class specified in the report nor the description of its anomalous properties should be revised.
Although SCP-789-JP, Dr. Kurauchi and their laboratory, Site-8195 Supplies Management Division and its distribution channels, and ██████ Inc. were all investigated, no anomalies other than SCP-789-JP's infohazardous nature were discovered. The origin of SCP-789-JP's anomalous properties remains unknown.
Addendum 1: The following are a proposal from Researcher Tsubono, who took over the examination of SCP-789-JP from Dr. Kurauchi, the first author of this file.
This report contains multiple inconsistencies. It states that SCP-789-JP's anomalous properties only change its object class. However, if that were true, the report would have been created before SCP-789-JP was found to be anomalous. Obviously, no report is ever written for a non-anomalous item, so such an anomaly should not have been discovered in the first place.
The report also states that the object class "Möbius" will be assigned after the writer describes the anomalous properties; this is also contradictory because SCP-789-JP's properties cannot be recognized unless an object class is assigned.
Since Dr. Kurauchi was affected by the SCP-789-JP characteristics, it is highly likely that deficiencies exist in the previous examination. It is also necessary to consider the possibility that the report has been tampered with or subjected to some unknown reality altering effect. We propose that SCP-789-JP be re-examined, potentially involving the deletion or substantial revision of the report.
- Researcher Tsubono
Addendum 2: The following are a proposal from Researcher Hayakawa, who was in charge of the re-examination.
Our re-examination revealed that SCP-789-JP, ██████ Inc., Dr. Kurauchi and their laboratory, Researcher Tsubono, and Site-8195 do not exist, and therefore it is impossible to specifically verify the discrepancies.
What is described in this file is evidently different from the actual situation, and we must take some immediate action. The following is a description of the phenomena assumed from the information available at this time and the countermeasures to be taken.
| Description | Specific hypothesis | Issue | Actions taken on this report |
|---|---|---|---|
| SCP-789-JP and its anomalous properties do not exist, and the report was created by an external cause. | One or more uncontained anomalies or external groups created the report containing false information, either directly or through manipulation of Foundation personnel. | The Foundation is under informational attack that could overturn its basic principles of Secure, Contain, and Protect. | This report is currently the only trace available for considering countermeasures to address the issue, and should therefore be protected without any revision. |
| While SCP-789-JP does not exist, this report itself possesses anomalous properties. | The anomaly has no physical form and manifests itself only as an anomalous influence surrounding this report. Or; the discrepancies and other factors surrounding the report can be collectively regarded as a single anomaly. |
Revising the description of this report may result in the loss of its anomalous properties. | After drafting another report designating the phenomenon as a new SCP object, this report itself should be contained and protected without any revision. |
| Unspecified reality altering effects are involved in the situation. | SCP-789-JP, along with the people and objects associated with it, existed at one point in the past, then ceased to exist for unknown reasons. | Interference attempts may be affected by reality altering effects. | Since there are currently no objects related to SCP-789-JP other than this report, the impact of reality alteration is likely to be stable. However, the report should be handled with caution due to the possibility of reactivation that will increase depending on our actions on it. Despite the fact that Researcher Tsubono expressed a willingness to delete or substantially revise the report, there is no trace of such action, which suggests that those measures are likely to trigger the reality alteration. The risk of adding an addendum is considered low since Tsubono's proposal itself remains intact; however, there are no guarantees, and therefore interference should be restricted to the minimum necessary. This report is the only trace available for considering countermeasures to address the issue, and should therefore be protected without any revision. |
The hypothesis that SCP-789-JP did not exist and that the report of a pre-existing SCP object was altered to its current version has been rejected based on a full examination of all known reports and SCP objects.
Under all circumstances, the object class section of this report should not be modified, and neither should the description of its anomalous properties.
This report must be protected without any revision.
- Researcher Hayakawa
