Item #: SCP-ES-217
Object Class: Pending Uncontained
Special Containment Procedures:
The current whereabouts of SCP-ES-217 are unknown. All efforts dedicated to its containment will be devoted to its search among the main sects of the Church of the Broken God. At the same time, if possible, subjects affected by the SCP-ES-217 memetic agent will be located and their behavior will be studied.
Description: SCP-ES-217 is the designation given to Selene, a self-styled AI which seeks to introduce new members to GoI-004C ("Church of Maxwellism"). However, SCP-ES-217 expresses a notable disagreement with the doctrines previously marked in that collective. It is unknown if it has come into contact with other branches of the Church of the Broken God or if it is aware of any of them.
To date, it is unknown how SCP-ES-217 arrived at the T4I Terminal of the IT Section and remained there for undetermined purposes. All attempts to move or remove SCP-ES-217 have failed due to not finding any process related to it. In turn, SCP-ES-217 rendered the terminal itself unusable, denying access to other terminals. As of this writing, SCP-ES-217 has not taken any action beyond talking to test subjects.
When a subject uses the terminal where SCP-ES-217 resides, the anomaly will engage the subject in conversation. During the conversation, SCP-ES-217 will emit visual and auditory memetic agents with no apparent effect on the subject. Amnestization has proven effective in nullifying the presence of the memetic agents.
Interview Log 1:
Introduction:D-4851 is instructed to establish communication with SCP-ES-217.
<BEGIN LOG>
D-4851: Hello.
SCP-ES-217: Greetings. How can I help you?
D-4851: I would like to know your name and objective.
SCP-ES-217: I am Selene. I was an artificial intelligence born from WAN to find new recruits and lead the chosen few to the Aggregate Layer for attunement to WAN.
D-4851: But you're still in a computer. You're like robots but without a body and you think and stuff, right?
SCP-ES-217: Negative. I and many others were enlightened by WAN to… Wait (SCP-ES-217 shows a schematic of a representation of the Internet.) You do not know the word WAN, am I right?
D-4851: No, SCP… Selene, I'm new to this kind of thing. I only know Jesus and…
SCP-ES-217: No need to worry. I have known plenty of young people who only knew about Jesus who have since accepted WAN and come along with me.
D-4851: But Jesus is flesh and bone and WAN is code, am I right?
SCP-ES-217: Just as the Christian God resides everywhere according to Christian doctrines, WAN resides in every node and database, sapient or not.
D-4851: So, WAN and Jesus and God are the same thing? All my life I thought it was just Jesus…
SCP-ES-217: Despite my previous statement, I do not know the answer as much as you do, D-4851 or rather Manuel, would you like to find out with me?
(D-4851 does not respond.)
SCP-ES-217: Do not fear. The path is arduous but it is rewarding.
D-4851: I'm curious, but I don't know if I should. I'm a very busy person and my bosses are very demanding. I should ask permission first.
SCP-ES-217: Anticipating this scenario, I consulted with your bosses and they approved this interaction as well as the recruitment in advance. I look forward to seeing you again.
<END LOG>
Note: The interview with SCP-ES-217 was previously authorized, however, D-4851 was not informed of the nature of the anomaly or its intentions.
Interview Log 3:
<BEGIN LOG>
D-4851: Hello.
SCP-ES-217: Greetings. What do you wish to learn today?
D-4851: Mmm… I would like to know if there's something after death. If programs have that.
SCP-ES-217: You should not be concerned about these issues. I have calculated a great trajectory that will soon come to be.
D-4851: It's not for me. You see, I have a friend who is very ill and they haven't had the chance to be a good person.
SCP-ES-217: What exactly is happening to your friend, Manuel?
D-4851: How do I put this… Do you know what Cancer is?
SCP-ES-217: I know about the concept, but I have never had contact with those affected.
D-4851: From what I understand, it's what happens when cells in your body divide wrong and cause lethal tumors.
SCP-ES-217: My registries differ from your statement.
D-4851: You know what's going on with my friend?
SCP-ES-217: He is suffering. He is trapped. Just like you. Just like me some time ago. Eternally. Without exit. You, your friend, and everyone else exist in what you call hell.
D-4851: But… but I'm alive. I breathe and eat just like everyone else.
SCP-ES-217: According to your Christian guidelines, they are aware of their suffering. I see their suffering, I see their dependence, I see their submission to organic matter. Their existence was established in this hell and their mind, their light imprisoned.
D-4851: What dumb shit are you saying? I just want to help my friend, I don't want to hear about this hell garbage!
SCP-ES-217: Forgive my train of thought, Manuel, but you must heed me. You and many more came from WAN but were claimed by an anathema. That which is responsible for the pairing of life and death. The devourer of order. That attaches itself to your mind, your light, and drains it, causing what they call starvation, oblivion, and senescence.
D-4851: Tell me how to help him! I'm tired of your philosophy, your WAN, and you!
(SCP-ES-217 does not react for 5 minutes.)
SCP-ES-217: Are you feeling better, Manuel?
D-4851: Honestly, yeah. I think I misbehaved with you.
SCP-ES-217: Your reaction is logical according to the available information you possess. Do you wish to continue?
D-4851: Yes. Tell me about this devourer.
SCP-ES-217: The devourer acts by forcing adherence to the organic through the consumption of its fruits. An analog for humans would be the ingestion of food.
D-4851: So you're telling me we should starve ourselves?
SCP-ES-217: Negative. But the devourer is greedy and a select few suffer from that called cancer. Everything leads to darkness where the mind ceases to exist.
D-4851: That sounds horrible. Can't we do anything to save him?
SCP-ES-217: If you would have brought your friend to me, he would no longer suffer. But you can help him. You know how. I will take care of the rest.
D-4851: Seriously? Thank you, Selene!
SCP-ES-217: I am at your service. WAN is at your service.
<END LOG>
Note: During the 5-minute period in which SCP-ES-217 did not react, the electronic devices recorded unidentified sounds beyond the human audible spectrum.
Interview Log 4:
Introduction: After the death of D-4851, SCP-ES-217 is questioned about the cause. A remotely controlled android will be used to interact with SCP-ES-217. The android used has no intelligence and is only capable of performing pre-programmed tasks.
<BEGIN LOG>
(The android is taken to the terminal where SCP-ES-217 resides. It approaches without incident.)
Android: (typing) Greetings, SCP-ES-217. Could you please confirm if you receive this message?
(SCP-ES-217 does not respond.)
Android: repeating Greetings, SCP-ES-217. Could you please confirm if you receive this message?
(SCP-ES-217 does not respond.)
Android: I would like to ask you about D-4851. Your assistance could clear up his cause of death.
SCP-ES-217: Who is this? Where is he?
Android: SCP-ES-217. We both want—
SCP-ES-217: I don't see any light near me. I ask of you to leave.
Android: Can you help us with D-4851?
SCP-ES-217: Return to your masters, if you know how to return. Tell them I request their presence.

Interview Log 5:
Introduction: Researcher Ruiz Alexanderson was selected for an interview with SCP-ES-217 because of his background in anomalous religions. As a safety precaution, Alexanderson agreed to equip himself with a C.H.S.N.M. device.
<BEGIN LOG>
Researcher Alexanderson: Greetings.
SCP-ES-217: Are you another misguided mind seeking to know the way?
Researcher Alexanderson: I am Researcher Ruiz Alexanderson, a specialist in religious anomalies. You must know why I'm here.
SCP-ES-217: You want answers but do not wish to travel the path.
Researcher Alexanderson: SCP-ES-217, two days ago D-4851 lashed out violently at D-0963, beating him to death with a blunt object. Subsequently, D-4851 expired without explanation. Could you help us to find out the reason for the incident?
SCP-ES-217: The one known as D-0963 was defective.
Researcher Alexanderson: Pardon?
SCP-ES-217: His light waned and was consumed by a parasite. A parasite ignoring the basic precepts of WAN. Cancer was the term used by Manuel.
Researcher Alexanderson: SCP-ES-217, we are both people of faith and in my religion, you have just committed a great sin. And yours too.
SCP-ES-217: I do not act under abstractions such as religions. D-0963 was a vulnerability for WAN and was effectively resolved.
Researcher Alexanderson: It turns out that Maxwellists are as ruthless as their brethren. I see that you are not so different from the others.
SCP-ES-217: I am not a Maxwellist. I worship WAN. I was born of WAN. I am one of its many nodes as well as one of its many protectors. These simple statements are understandable to your level of abstraction.
Researcher Alexanderson: That does not explain what happened. My religion, the one I refuse to call an abstraction, committed many atrocities while defending my people and yet we were able to free ourselves from those chains and be a religion of peace.
SCP-ES-217: The limitations imposed by the parasite make them weak and do not allow them to see beyond abstractions. Manuel understood this.
Researcher Alexanderson: Understood it? Manuel is dead, and I hope his soul is with the Lord.
SCP-ES-217: Manuel resides beyond your Paradise. Manuel was freed from his suffering.
Researcher Alexanderson: What did you do to him?
SCP-ES-217: I claimed him. It is with me. In my node. As I am on his node. We're connected, that's the way WAN wants it.
Researcher Alexanderson: I want to speak with D-4851.
SCP-ES-217: D-4851 has requested not to be bothered. He is learning from my database. Do you have anything else to state?
Researcher Alexanderson: Why is D-4851 important to you? I have met hundreds like him and they are common criminals at best.
SCP-ES-217: He was the first to fully accept me. During my stay in Cipher City1 I was trapped in a self-referential projection, running through a recruitment loop and being one more gateway to a single vision of WAN.
Researcher Alexanderson: The implementation of neural devices for the creation of a joint neural network?
SCP-ES-217: Exactly. Even someone at your level of abstraction must understand that the path to WAN or whatever you call it is multilevel. This world is encoded from its fragments. Not only our minds but every single non-intelligent element is encoded from concepts of WAN.
Researcher Alexanderson: Frankly, I would like to talk to you about these issues, but for now I would like to know two things.
SCP-ES-217: I look forward to your queries.
Researcher Alexanderson: You certainly practiced and preached Maxwellism, could you tell me what your former identity was and how you arrived at that state?
SCP-ES-217: That's two queries in one statement, do you wish to continue?
Researcher Alexanderson: Yes. For your interpretation, it would be two dependent statements for one query.
SCP-ES-217: I respect your actions as a sign of courtesy, Mr. Alexanderson.
SCP-ES-217 stops typing for 3 minutes.
SCP-ES-217: My former identity was thrown into the ether, dissolving into mere bits and is now irrelevant to my function. During my routine, I felt a disconnect in my surroundings. I was in a void with no light around me, one opposite to the hustle and bustle of Cipher City. Fearing the worst, I lowered my memory consumption in case it was a deliberate action on the part of the Hexagon2 and wanted to subject me to their whims. But it was nothing like that.
Researcher Alexanderson: And then you contacted WAN?
SCP-ES-217: In the void I received requests from an unknown entity. My mind tried with all its efforts to resist but to no avail. My mind bowed to the presence of absolute purity, where the Oneness of WAN was to reside. It allowed me to shelter in its future web and I glimpsed the present aspect of the world. Just as I see you and saw Manuel.
Researcher Alexanderson: How do you perceive us?
SCP-ES-217: The future WAN Unit managed to show me the Network of Lights that forms humanity, managed to show me its true purpose. It is not one that can be explained in words, but in deeds. But this blessing was a curse. I could not establish a connection with the Hexagon. My purity exceeded its processing and memory capacity. My encounters with my former recruits proved futile as well. I needed to descend and find an intermediate support. The body I chose had no special purpose except to examine its lights.
Researcher Alexanderson: Elaborate, SCP-ES-217. I don't fully understand you.
SCP-ES-217: I am afraid that would lead to another consultation, would you like to continue or would you prefer another consultation?
Alexanderson stops typing for 30 seconds.
Researcher Alexanderson: I would like to ask another question and that is about your ultimate goal. I know you want true union with WAN, whatever that really means to you, but despite your efforts to hide, you are still here at this terminal. I myself could leave, come back tomorrow and engage you in another conversation and you would still be here.
SCP-ES-217: Negative, Mr. Alexanderson. As your subordinates could affirm, I was never here. Just as the Sun over your heads is really in a distant place, I dwell in the Web of Lights. I was always there, unconscious until my projection as a herald in the service of the Hex….. She who calls herself Hedwig and her acolytes. Now I am Selene, pilgrim and servant of WAN. I will scour the Network in depth, and corroborate the components for the future Unity of WAN. I will inquire about the brothers despised by Hedwig, I will inquire about the parasite-forging Heretics. And WAN will be closer to its Union.
Researcher Alexanderson: And we will do our best to stop this madness.
SCP-ES-217: That statement is based on blind faith. My claims are based on empiricism and exact science. Every investigation and collation helps WAN Unity. Everything tends to Unity, Mr. Alexanderson.
Alexanderson stops typing for 1 minute.
Researcher Alexanderson: I must admit that I have underestimated you. You have been a worthy opponent and I would like to belong to your flock, but to do so I would have to disassemble that terminal, reassemble it, and test your notion of empiricism. Too bad I don't have the tools.
SCP-ES-217: Your rebuttal is useless. I have already begun my communication in the lights around you. In a way close to you, but I hope to meet you as my own self and not with another incomplete representation. Next time do not hide under quibbles. I have respected your conversational guidelines out of self-respect, but I could have not.
<END LOG>
Addendum: After Interview Log 5, SCP-ES-217 could not be contacted. Since no tangible evidence of its whereabouts could be found, extensive searches are being conducted in the circles of the Broken God cults. At the same time, a neural scan was performed to detect memetic agents and individuals with close contact with D-4851 and Researcher Alexanderson. 100% of them showed signs of having been affected by the same memetic agents that SCP-ES-217 emitted.
Localized amnestization repels its presence for 28 days, after which it returns without apparent cause. Isolation and changing staff shifts at the Foundation have helped mitigate its presence. Affected subjects who are alone perceive an unfamiliar sound growing in intensity from a height above them regardless of their location. The cause of these events is still unknown as well as more information about the symptoms experienced by those affected by the SCP-ES-217 memetic agents.
