UIU File 1999-074: Codename "Cicada Chopinist"
Summary: Suspect has the paranormal ability of involuntarily affecting musical performances/playback music, altering its contents.
Name: Lev Badeni
Irregularity Cross-reference: Polish, Human, Music, Cult
Physical Description:
Sex | Height | Weight/Build | Race | Hair | Eyes | Identifying Attributes |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Male | 178cm | 57kg/Slim | White | Blond | Blue | Uses ear plugs. |
Capabilities: The suspect is a Polish man in his mid-forties, capable of affecting and altering musical performances/playback music within a 50m radius around himself (estimated). Affected music has been identified as that of renowned Polish composer Frédéric François Chopin, with the effect immediately terminated if the listener or source of sound moves outside of the area of influence.
Purpose/Motive: Made contact with paranormal pharmacologist ”dado”. Suspect went missing on July of 1998 after the Poland Divine Entity Emergence Event, but by 1999/07/19, he had already appeared inside Germany, and his capabilities manifested while boarding an aircraft from Frankfurt Airport to the John F. Kennedy International Airport.
Modus Operandi: It’s believed the suspect has partial to no control over his capabilities, affecting all music within his range.
Since entering the country, the suspect has continued to move either by foot or using stolen vehicles. Due to traits discussed below, they’ve been seen evading highly populated cities.
Behavior: The suspect is strongly afraid of his capabilities and their manifestation, and wears ear plugs to prevent their cognition. If he recognizes an event, he’ll look around in dismay, and will attempt to flee the scene, covering his ears while screaming.
A: Data on previous suspects of the Divine Event provided by the Foundation: The suspect is a zealous lover of Chopin, and belongs to the “St. Chopin's Orthodox Church”, a paranormal cult in Poland known for their Chopinism. They became anomalous when they received a “Gift from God” when they were recognized as the most fervent believers to have reproduced Chopin’s music at the Chopin Summoning Ceremony in March, 1988. in fact, there are accounts that he told other believers about his capabilities, saying he had been “commanded to only listen to sacred music by St. Chopin Himself”.
B: Data on dado: Paranormal pharmacologist operating within the United States. Produces anomalous medicine in response to requests made to them, and is involved in the management of multiple facilities and services.
Ever since the Divine Event, they’ve become much more active, advertising their products by placing billboards all over the United States through unknown means. In particular, the first publicity for “remove all service by dado” appeared on 1999/01/01, altering walls of highways and buildings in over 20 states, being reported on media both national and international due to its scope and contents. The following is the advertisement text:
remove all service by dado
this is dado yes. lots of people no veil worry
new business of dado is rid of that
funny stuff dado fix service
system limited price very low
help want you number call 1-800-iam-dado
u trust dado no worries
No successful calls have been made by UIU agents calling to “1-800-iam-dado”.
C: Cellphone: Discovered in stolen vehicle used by suspect. There is evidence of over 90 calls made to “1-800-iam-dado”.
D: “Athena I” model: 32 flying objects modeled after the Athena I solid-fuel rocket developed by Lockheed Martin for satellite launches. 30cm of total length. Attempts to damage them have failed; composition unknown. Continuously fell into the walls of the UIU branch office’s detention center, allowing the suspect to escape.
Current Status: At large.
Crimes: Motor Vehicle Theft
Sentencing: Indefinite detention
History of UIU Action:
1999/07/19: Capabilities manifested on broadcast speakers during flight from Frankfurt to New York. At the time, there was not enough evidence to determine this to be anomalous, with the UIU not being aware of this event.
1999/07/25: Theft of passenger car in New York State. Eyewitness testimony was used to create a sketch, and an employee from a nearby DIY store confirmed that the man had bought several tools believed to have been used in the crime. When the suspect was identified, their ties to a paranormal cult were established, and a request to provide information was made to the Foundation.
1999/07/27: The UIU was made aware of the 07/19 incident following the Foundation providing information on the suspect, determining it was caused by their capabilities.
1999/07/28: dado modified billboards in 27 states to promote “remove all service by dado”. The content is nearly identical to the one from 01/01, except for the addition of the sentence “okref dado you help” in smaller writing at the end of the advertisement.
1999/08/01: Suspect causes a self-inflicted accident while driving a stolen car in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. Skit marks at the scene show the likely cause of the accident to be the suspect falling asleep while driving. When local police arrived at the scene, the suspect had already fled, with a cellphone having been recovered from the car’s glove box. Of note is that the car’s audio system had been violently damaged with some sort of tool at some point before the incident.
1999/08/03: Theft of car in Hazard, Kentucky, using the same modus operandi as the one from 07/25. A check was enforced at the place due to the suspect’s suspected involvement, and he was found in Falmouth. The suspect was detained without opposition, and was transported to the UIU Frankfurt office.
1999/08/04: At 1:47 AM, the Frankfurt office was continuously hit by small projectiles resembling the “Athena I”, damaging the detention center’s walls. Suspect escaped using the impacts’ shock and thunderous confusion that followed. The only damage caused by the projectiles was the one to the walls mentioned before.
On 1999/07/30, through the mediation of the Foundation and the support of the Polish Central Bureau for Paranormal Cases, a house search was conducted on the suspect’s house. The suspect’s house was in poor sanitary conditions, with windows blockaded by windows and furniture, and many items scattered inside. The following are some of the items recovered:
- Large quantity of gramophone records. Almost all destroyed. The suspect’s fingerprints were found in some of the fragments.
- Three grand pianos. Comparatively new damage was found in large quantities, with almost all string having been cut.
- Multiple picture frames. Some show burn marks and ash agglutinations.
- Violins and other string instruments. In all cases, the bodies had been violently damaged, with many fingerprints on the fingerboard.
- Sound producing devices such as record players and televisions. All destroyed.
- Empty wine bottles (At least eight, including broken ones.)
- Blades covered in blood. Three in total.
- Jute rope tied to the basement’s door. A bundle of 156m of rope was found in the room.
- Writing paper. Addressed to St. Chopin's Orthodox Church member Jacek Smolarek, with no further description given.
- Newspaper clippings referencing dado’s products and services, especially “remove all service by dado”.
The following is the log for the suspect’s interrogation, which occurred approximately 3 hours before his escape.
<Start log>
Investigator Vanden: Let’s start. Alright, so let me get this out of the way: Why did you want to contact dado?
Suspect remains silent.
Investigator Vanden: It’s known that you’ve made dozens of calls to dado, and that dado answered them, and knows of your existence.
Suspect remains silent.
Investigator Vanden: Answer the question, Mr. Badeni. Nothing will change if you remain silent.
Suspect: (Looks down) All I wanted was for the music to stop.
Investigator Vanden: Stop the music?
Suspect: I no longer love Chopin as I used to.
Investigator Vanden: So you have left the cult?
Suspect: Yes. I’d already done enough, so I thought I could get away with it.
Investigator Vanden: When you say “done enough”, what do you mean?
Suspect: To the great Saint Chopin, his music and his many achievements. I was entranced by it since age 12, and it’s been 32 years since. All that time I’ve studied the music, listened to the music, played the music, loved the music, revered the music.
Investigator Vanden: I see. Going back to the topic, is it alright to interpret “running away” as “meeting dado”.
Suspect: Yeah… (Short silence) All I wanted was for my illness to be cured.
Investigator Vanden: By illness, do you mean the anomaly you possess?
Suspect: Yes.
Investigator Vanden: So your goal was to use the “remove all service”?
Suspect: (Small nod) Surely music will become even more rooted in the public from now on. Before that happens, I must meet dado and get rid of this disease. When I thought about it, the risk and guilt of stealing became nothing. I couldn’t believe how calm I was, even thought it was my first time doing it. I’m truly sorry about causing the accident, but I had to fix this no matter what.
Investigator Vanden: I understand. Now, onto the next question-
Suspect: (Interrupting Investigator Vanden) Allow me to ask you one question.
Investigator Vanden: What is it?
Suspect: Are you a religious person? And if so, have you ever doubted the God you believe in?
Investigator Vanden: I’ve never been too devout myself. What’s your point?
Suspect: When you doubted, did you ever feel something was breaking apart? Because I could. I could feel the despair of having the faith for these treasures of humanity that I’d loved for over 30 years collapse in a single day. I loved Chopin. Without doubt, and stronger than anything I’d loved before. Yet I never thought about what the future would be like until that one day.
Investigator Vanden: Mr. Badeni, please calm down.
Suspect: (Excitedly) We can’t see God. Being above the skies, we can only know of His image through legends and portraits. Only knowing this, we cannot guarantee that what we believe in isn’t some sort of monster. I cannot know where my faith will take me.
Investigator Vanden: Calm down!
Suspect stands up, but falls to his knees shortly after.
Suspect: Chopin sees me. He sees me, because I believed in Him, loved Him, served Him, and have been chosen by Him.
