Item #: SCP-1939-JP
Object Class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-1939-JP is to be transported to the containment site closest to the point where it was recovered, and then stored in a refrigerated containment unit. Personnel working at each site may consume SCP-1939-JP with the permission of the Site Director. The instances with the earliest stated expiration date should be consumed first, and a minimum of five instances must be kept in containment as samples for experimental purposes. In view of the physical strain caused by continuous consumption, personnel who frequently use SCP-1939-JP may be subject to access restrictions at the discretion of the Medical Department. Nighttime consumption of SCP-1939-JP for other than experimental purposes is prohibited.
All locations that meet the conditions for the appearance of SCP-1939-JP-1 are to be constantly monitored via surveillance cameras; five locations are currently being monitored. When the appearance of SCP-1939-JP-1 is confirmed, an agent stationed in the area is to contact SCP-1939-JP-1 and secure SCP-1939-JP. In case a civilian contacts SCP-1939-JP-1 and causes the manifestation of SCP-1939-JP's anomalous properties, they are to be taken into custody, interviewed, and administered Class B amnestics.
All road construction projects in Japan must be reviewed and modified if necessary to ensure that they do not meet the conditions under which SCP-1939-JP-1 appears. For locations that have already met the conditions, new street lights are to be installed to prevent the conditions from being fulfilled, except for five locations that are close to Foundation front companies and are therefore easy to monitor.
Description: SCP-1939-JP is a beverage with anomalous properties. While the design of its container, taste, and aroma closely resemble Monster Energy, a product of Monster Beverage Corporation, the words "MONSTER ENERGY" that would normally be written on the container have been replaced with "MOONSTAR ENERGY".
SCP-1939-JP manifests its anomalous properties when orally ingested by a human being. This occurs only during nighttime and it can be consumed as a normal soft drink in the daytime. In this context, "nighttime" is not a strictly timed period, but rather from sunset to sunrise at the location where SCP-1939-JP is present.
The human who ingests SCP-1939-JP (the subject) experiences the following sequence of events.
Firstly, the subject's body (including clothing and other items attached to them) transforms into the shape of an aircraft and becomes immune to any physical impediments. Communication devices and GPS terminals maintain their functionality during this time. The total length of the aircraft is roughly equal to the subject's height.
The subject then ascends to an altitude of 3000 m, flies in a circular motion, and then lands at the starting point. This motion is aerodynamically improbable, and the speed of movement is nearly constant regardless of the type of aircraft involved. After landing, the subject's body reverts to its original form, thus completing the sequence of events.
Subjects have testified that they are able to observe celestial bodies with remarkable clarity during the flight, regardless of weather conditions, and can even see the lines that form several major constellations. Most subjects tend to view their experiences positively, claiming that it was "exhilarating" or a "stress reliever." In addition, SCP-1939-JP has been observed to have a potent fatigue-relieving effect, whether or not its anomalous properties are manifested.
SCP-1939-JP-1 is a humanoid entity responsible for the sale of SCP-1939-JP and has the characteristics of a Latino European male. SCP-1939-JP-1 appears under street lights in locations that meet the following four conditions.
One of the locations potentially triggering the appearance of SCP-1939-JP-1.
- It is located in Japan.
- It is in the vicinity of a railroad station.
- It is on a street with an intersection.
- There is only one street light.
It is currently not possible to predict the time pattern of its appearance, although it occurs at night in all cases.
Following its appearance, SCP-1939-JP-1 attempts to sell an SCP-1939-JP instance to an individual in the vicinity. After the sale is concluded or 30 minutes pass without a deal, SCP-1939-JP-1 vanishes from the scene.
SCP-1939-JP first came to the Foundation's attention when a post about a "teleporting drug dealer" was made in the Internet urban legend community, which led to its discovery.
To date, seventeen different aircraft types have been observed in the SCP-1939-JP intake experiments. The following is a partial experiment log; all experiments were conducted using ships and in restricted navigation areas over the Pacific Ocean to prevent sightings by civilians.
SCP-1939-JP Intake Experiment Log 01 - 20██/██/██
Boeing 787
Subject: A D-Class personnel
Result: The subject was transformed into a Boeing 787. Its paint scheme matched that of Japan Airlines. After takeoff, the subject flew for 20 minutes before landing.
Note: The subject stated that they had been intrigued by the Boeing 787 aircraft in their childhood. It was noted that the subject's post-experiment work attitude had improved.
SCP-1939-JP Intake Experiment Log 02 - 20██/██/██
Beechcraft Queen Air B-65P
Subject: A D-Class personnel
Result: The subject was transformed into a Beechcraft Queen Air B-65P. Its design is believed to be a replica of Kunikaze, the same type of aircraft used by the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan (GSI) to take aerial photographs for mapping purposes. After takeoff, the subject flew for 20 minutes before landing. The subject was in possession of photographs that appeared to have been taken from the air.
Note: The subject claimed that they felt a sudden urge to take photographs during the flight. In light of this case, it was hypothesized that the subject is capable of using the functions installed in the aircraft. Due to the risk of transformation into fighter aircraft, the use of D-Class for future experiments was discontinued.
SCP-1939-JP Intake Experiment Log 03 - 20██/██/██
Lockheed Vega
Subject: Researcher Machida (volunteered for the experiment)
Result: The subject was transformed into a Lockheed Vega. The aircraft body was painted red. After takeoff, the subject flew for 20 minutes before landing.
Note: The subject stated that they had seen a film about Amelia Earhart in the past, and suggested that this may have influenced the experiment. They claimed to have heard what sounded like a feminine voice during the flight, although no such voice was identified in the audio recording.
SCP-1939-JP Intake Experiment Log 04 - 20██/██/██
Mitsubishi A6M Zero Model 62
Subject: Agent Uragami (volunteered for the experiment)
Result: The subject was transformed into a Mitsubishi A6M Zero Model 62. After takeoff, the subject flew for 20 minutes before landing. They were instructed to attempt to fire the machine guns into the ocean surface, and were able to do so without any difficulty.
Note: The subject stated that their grandfather's accounts of his experiences during World War II, which the subject had heard in their childhood, may have influenced the experiment. They also claimed that they were able to control the firing of the machine guns at will.
SCP-1939-JP Intake Experiment Log 05 - 20██/██/██
Van's Aircraft RV-14
Subject: Agent Yoshino (volunteered for the experiment)
Result: The subject was transformed into a Van's Aircraft RV-14. After takeoff, the subject flew for 20 minutes before landing. The aircraft was observed performing aerobatic maneuvers, such as rolling its body. The subject reported symptoms of motion sickness.
Note: The subject claimed that they had been interested in aerobatics, but found it more taxing than they had expected. This is the only case to date in which ingestion of SCP-1939-JP resulted in adverse effects on the subject.
Addendum: On 2018/12/17, SCP-1939-JP-1 did not immediately disappear after the transaction was completed, but instead engaged in conversation with the purchaser, Agent Ariake. The following is a transcript of the audio recording.
<Log Begin>
SCP-1939-JP-1: Thanks for all your purchases, would you like to drink it now and have a little chat with me up in the sky?
Agent Ariake: An unexpected statement from SCP-1939-JP-1 has been observed. Please advise further instructions.
[Judging that the risk of sighting is low due to the low population density of the area, the Command instructs Agent Ariake to ingest SCP-1939-JP.]
Agent Ariake: Okay, I'll take it. Please tell me your story.
[Agent Ariake transforms into a replica of the Wright Flyer and takes off shortly after. SCP-1939-JP-1 flies with unknown propulsion.]
SCP-1939-JP-1: Excellent choice of aircraft. It must be lovely to share some nectar with you.
Agent Ariake: This aircraft? It looks rather outdated.
SCP-1939-JP-1: Its oldness is what makes me nostalgic. Exactly 115 years ago today, humans came to the sky that once belonged to the birds and the deities. Not by floating or gliding, but by flying.
Agent Ariake: You mean the Wright Brothers' first man-powered flight? Oh, is this from back then?
SCP-1939-JP-1: Yep. How's it feel to fly? No wonder humans aspired to reach the sky. As a senior flyer, I can definitely attest to the beauty of this experience.
Agent Ariake: What kind of mechanism makes you fly?
SCP-1939-JP-1: See the wings on my shoes? That's how I fly.
Agent Ariake: I don't think it's possible to achieve balance when the lift force is acting at such a low position relative to the center of gravity.
SCP-1939-JP-1: The man-made system of physics is certainly beautiful and useful. But you guys know that not all things are bound by it, right?
Agent Ariake: What do you mean?
SCP-1939-JP-1: I'm just saying that your falsehoods won't work. You're not some tired after-work businessman. You're a professional who protects the world, aren't you?
Agent Ariake: Why do you know that… no, who are you in the first place, and why do you sell these beverages?
SCP-1939-JP-1: My identity is not really that important. I sell the refreshments to give you humans wings.
[SCP-1939-JP-1 disappears immediately after this interaction. Agent Ariake lands normally after 20 minutes of flight.]
<Log End>
Wright Flyer
Agent Ariake claimed that SCP-1939-JP-1 said "don't push yourself too hard" shortly before the disappearance, which was not confirmed in the audio recording.
